George HINDLEY

HINDLEY, George. Private 25227, 16th Manchester Regiment ,killed in France 23rd April 1917 aged 19. He was the son of John and Alice and brother of Alfred who died from the effects of war service in 1925. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Leigh Cemetery, Lancashire, and also on the Signal Trench Memorial 14 at Wancourt British Cemetery, France.

He enlisted on the 24th July 1916 at Ashton-under-Lyne aged 19 and 23 days. He was posted as Private 25227, to the 25th Reserve Battalion, Manchester Regiment. He was living with his parents and siblings at 48 Organ Street, Leigh and he worked as a surface colliery worker. He embarked for France on the 14th December 1916 from Folkestone and disembarked at Boulogne the following day. He joined the 16th Battalion at Etaples on the 16th. On the 23rd April 1917 he was killed or died of his wounds shortly afterward. His mother was his next of kin.
