G071 WILLIAM DAVID CALLAN. (Memorial states William Daniel) Commissioned (Chief) Gunner, Royal Navy on HMS Ark Royal. Born 21 October 1874 at Plaistow, West Ham, Essex, to John, (stoker in the R.N.) and Louisa Callan nee Hoing. In 1881 he was residing with his parents and siblings at 28 Victoria Road, Plaistow. Enlisted 21 March 1890 on HMS Impregnable as Boy 2nd Class 154416, civilian occupation, clerk. On the 26 December 1896 at Stoke Damerel, Devon he married Eliza Jane Mitchell. Appointed as Petty Officer 2nd Class 21 December 1897, Petty Officer 1st Class on the 21 December 1897. Promoted to Acting Gunner 8 October 1900. In 1901 he was residing with wife and children at 1 Kempton Terrace, Torpoint, Devon, serving in the Royal Navy. On the 27 November 1916 he was charged with neglect of duty, contrary to the prejudice of good order of naval discipline. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to forfeit six months of seniority and to be dismissed from his ship. Died in Royal Naval Hospital, Bighi, Malta 8th March 1920 of septicaemia caused by an abscess on his neck. Memorial erected by the Officers and Ship’s Company of H.M.S. Ark Royal. Memorial lists him as William Daniel Callan, his is correct name was William David Callan.
