Frederick Harvey ELMES. Private PLY8672 Royal Marine Light Infantry on HMS Sentinel. Born 11th June 1877 at Hampstead, enlisted 24th May 1897, died 27th October 1905 aged 28 of a fractured skull caused when he fell into a drydock at Malta while returning to ship. Son of Frederick Lonsdale Elmes and Maria Rebecca nee Oke. He was baptised on the 12th June 1876 at St Mary the Virgin, Hampstead, Camden, London. In 1891 he was living with his parents and siblings at Vine Cottage, Ballards Lane, Finchley, Middlesex. His father of St Anne's Vicarage, Layruth Road South East London was informed of his death 28th October 1905. His memorial shows his surname as ELMS. At rest in Plot B, Grave 113, Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta.N.B. His birth was registered as Frederick Harvey Elmes,, 2nd quarter, (April-June1876), at Hampstead

Frederick Harvey ELMS, Marine, HMS Sentinel, aged 28 years, died 27th October 1905. Born in Hampstead, London, 11th June 1877 he joined the Corps on 24th May 1897. After basic training he was sent to ‘B’ company, Plymouth division. He served in the Far East on board HMS Centurion, then HMS Daphne during the Boxer Rebellion. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery his grave remained unmarked until 2004 when ‘Royal Marines in Foreign Fields’ Malta, supplied one
