Florence Katherine COORE-MEIN. Wife of Major Frederick COORE-MEIN 1st Shropshire Light Infantry and only daughter of George Owen, Esquire of Park Issa, Oswestry England. She was married at Oswestry, Shropshire 13 November 1886. Her son Owen Coore Mein was born 28 July 1887. She died in Malta 5 August 1887.

Son of Major General George Mein and Marianne nee Coore. 1851 residing with his parents and sister at 70 Harborne Road Edgbaston, Warwickshire. 21 November 1877 he married Jane Frend at Borrisnafarney, Ireland. 1881 residing with his wife, Jane at Manor House, Edgmond, Shropshire occupation, Captain 53rd Regiment and 2 Shropshire Regiment Volunteer Corps, his wife died 1884. He remarried 13 November 1886 in Shropshire to Florence Katherine Owen. She too died August 1887 in Malta. 1891 a widower aged 40 retired Major residing with his children at Abbey Lodge Barnsdall, Kent. About March 1892 he married Caroline Lavinia Calland at Marylebone, London. 1901 residing with his wife and his children at 2 Fons George Road, Wilton, Somerset. He died in 1905 at Taunton, Somerset

Private 6/2389 George Frederick COORE MEIN, of the 1st Canterbury Regiment New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Born 7 December 1882 at Newport, Shropshire, England to Jane nee Frend and Frederick Coore Mein. He was the grandson of Major General George Mein. His mother Jane Frend was the daughter of Lt.-Col. William Causabon Frend and Harriott Georgiana Garvey. She married Frederick Coore Mein on 22 November 1877 and died on 28 March 1884. He fought in the Boer War with the West Somerset Yeomanry and was wounded from a gunshot injury to his left ankle. He enlisted 11 April 1914 aged 33 years. His residence at the time of enlistment was given as 14 Kyber Pass, Auckland his sister Mrs J Wallace of Ballincoo, Shipmore, Kings County, Ireland was his next of kin. He posted to 3rd Auckland Regiment as Private 3/4553. He embarked from Auckland 15 August 1914 and was part of a 1000-man force involved in the capture of German Samoa. He landed at Apia Beach 29 August 1914. (

After this campaign he returned to New Zealand and on the 15 April 1915, he was posted 4th Canterbury Regiment as Private 6/2389 and was posted to the Dardenelles. He was killed in action at Rhododendron Ridge, Gallipoli Peninsular on 7 August 1915 aged 34 years
He is commemorated on the New Zealand Memorial at Chunuk Bair, Turkey including Gallipoli.

George Frederick Coore Mein -
Eldest son of Major Fredrick Coore (King’s Shropshire Light Infantry) and Jane Mein (Nee Frend). They married in Roscre, Ireland in 1877. George was born in Newport, Shropshire on 7 December 1881.
George was educated in Chatham House, Ramsgate. Afterwards he followed in his father’s footsteps and also served in the army. He served as a private during the Boer War with the 25th Company Imperial Yeomanry. He is entitled to a Queen’s South Africa medal with the clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902.
Between the interim of the Boer War and First World War George moved to Auckland, New Zealand and took up farming. During the outbreak of the First World War he joined up for Imperial service and served as a private with the Auckland regiment. Private Mein took part in the capture of Samoa, both New Zealand and Australian forces helped captured the German controlled island in August 1914. Then after returning to New Zealand, George again volunteered for active services and embarked for Gallipoli. George was killed in action on 7th August 1915 during the battle of Chunuk Bair, while advancing along Rhododendron Spur.
