BARTLETT Frederick. Sapper, 12686, 28th Fortress Company, Royal Engineers. Mentioned in Despatches, Serbian Gold Medal. Died 20th October 1916, aged 34 years, the son of George and Mary Ellen Bartlett, of 26 Bath Street, Weymouth.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers on the 31st March 1903 aged 20 and 11 months. His place of birth was Corsham near Box, Wiltshire and by occupation was an engine driver. He served in the Vacoas Mountains, Mauritius from the 23rd December 1904 to 30th December 1907, then in England and Malta from 15th June 1910 until he shot himself in the head on the 20th October 1916. He had served 13 years and 204 days. and he was awarded the Gold Medal by the King of Serbia. He had two brothers also serving their country. Bert, Leading Stoker on HMS Sheffield aged 29 , born 1890 and Sapper 286429, 459 Field Company Royal Engineers, Section 3, Midland army of occupation aged 23, born 1896.
HINTON Harry George. Private, 14411, 7th, Wiltshire Regiment, formerly 15283 Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He was wounded in Salonika and died in Malta 20th October 1916, aged 24 years. The son of Mrs. Mary Hinton, of Stoke Lyne, Bicester, Oxfordshire.
