NIELD, Fred. Private 49305, 1st Cheshire Regiment, killed in action 30th May 1918 aged 20. He was the son of Thomas and Emma of 10, Chapel Street, Macclesfield and brother of Harry who also fell in action. He is commemorated on a family memorial at Macclesfield Cemetery, Cheshire and he is at rest in Tannay British Cemetery, Thiennes, Nord France
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 5th April 1915 aged 19 years and 40 days, lived at 10, Chapel Street, Sutton, Macclesfield and was by occupation a labourer. On the 20th April 1915 he was posted at Private 3503, 2/7th Cheshire Regiment During his training he reported sick to 2/3rd Welsh Field Ambulance on the 19th May 1915. he was transferred to the Base hospital, Birmingham, which was the 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham the same day suffering from a Inguinal hernia. He was discharged fit for war service on the 8th June 1915. On the 30th August 1916 he was posted to France. He disembarked at Rouen the same day and then marched into No1, Territorial Base Depot, Rouen. Whilst at the base depot he was issued with a new army number, 49305, and he was posted to the 1st Cheshire Regiment at the front on the 10th September 1916 and joined his unit at the front on the 12th. An Order from 1st Army Headquarters on the 23rd November 1916 to his regiment at the front, instruction the he is withdrawn from the firing line and despatched to 5th Divisional School. He was under aged, date of birth 15th March 1898. He was the sent to 4th Infantry Base Depot from the front on the 23rd December 1916. On the 30th August 1917 he was posted back to the 1st Battalion and he was killed in action on the 30th May 1918.
