Francis Patrick (Frank) McGOWAN

McGOWAN, Francis Patrick (Frank). Rifleman Z1230, No 2 Company. 4th Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action in France 8th May 1915 aged 27. He was the son of John and Jane, of 21, Queen Street, Knutsford. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire and also on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 2nd September 1914 at Manchester aged 26 and 7 months and posted to the army reserve. His occupation prior to enlistment was a joiner and lived with his parents at 21, Queen Street, Knutsford . On the 5th March he was posted to the 1st Battalion, then to the 5th on the 5th March 1915 and finally on the 1st April 1915 to the 4th Battalion. He embarked for France on the 1st April 1915 and was killed in action on the 8th May 1915 have served 249 days. He had a brother James Martin who was in a War Hospital in Yorkshire aged 27 as of the 10th April 1919. Auth; I am unable to read the location of this hospital, it starts like "Flec"!!
