1914-1918

Henry Francis CLIFFORD. Major, B Squadron, 1/1st Royal Gloucestershire Hussars died 9 Janaury 1917 aged 45. Son of Annie Clifford, of Frampton Court, and the late Henry James Clifford, husband of Hilda Clifford, of Frampton Court, Stonehouse, Glos. Served in the South African Campaign.

At rest in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.


Edward CAPENER. Private 20555, 7th Gloucestershire Regiment died 11 March 1917 aged 40. Son of William Capener; husband of Annie E. Capener, of 11, Mercy Place, Southgate St., Gloucester. Born North Nibley, Gloucestershire. At rest in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.


Charles Christopher FRYER. Private 26821, 12th Gloucestershire Regiment died 3 November 1917 aged 20. Son of Albert Joseph and Flora Mary Fryer, of Frampton-on-Severn, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. At rest in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.


Frederick Robert William John HITCHINGS. Lance Sergeant 30846, 10th Lancashire Fusiliers, formery 23434 Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 12th May 1917. Son of George Frederick and Mary Ann ( Annie) Hitchings, nee Halling of Frampton-on-Severn, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.


Percival Leonard HITCHINGS. Private 33069, 12th Gloucestershire Regiment died 25th April 1918 aged 19. Son of George Frederick and Mary Ann (Annie) Hitchings, nee Halling of Frampton-on-Severn, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. At rest in Merville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


William Henry MORGAN. Rifleman R/34035, 16th King's Royal Rifle Corps, formerly 26895, Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 21st March 1918. Son of William and Jane of (1911) Perryway Road, Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire. At rest in Ypres reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.


Gerald PROUT. Private 160990, 54th Canadian Infantry. Prior to enlistment he had served 2 years with the Gloucestershire Yeomanry. Killed in action 14 November 1916. Born 4th July 1887 to James and Kate, nee Cave of Park Farm, Eastington, Gloucestershire. He left Bristol Port bound for Quebec, Canada on the 4th October 1913 on ship, Royal George. At rest in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, Somme France.


George Henry PURNELL. Driver T4/249085,3rd Company, 2nd South Midland, 61st Division Train, Army Service Corps. Killed in action 3rd June 1917 aged 22 Son of Henry and Eliza Mary nee Rowles of 34 Wellington Street, Gloucester City. At rest in Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.


Alfred STAPLEHURST. Private 16127, 7th Gloucestershire Regiment . Killed in action 23 July 1915 in Gallipoli aged 33. Son of Henry and Ruth Staplehurst, of Pale House Common, Framfield, Sussex, husband of Annie Maria Staplehurst, of Park Lodge, East Hoathly, Halland, Sussex. Born at Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey, including Gallipoli.


Albert Edward TOWNSEND. Gunner 29001, 28th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died 3 August 1917 aged 33. Son of George and Mary Ann Townsend, of Frampton-on-Severn, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. At rest in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.


Walter Henry TAINTON. Private 2869, B Coy, 2nd Gloucestershire Regiment died 13 May 1915 aged 39. Son of Henry Tainton, of Horsley, Stroud, Glos.; husband of Clara Jane Tainton, of Frampton-on-Severn, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.


Richard Sidney WINTER. Able Seaman R/4635, 3rd Reserve (Anson) Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Royal Naval (VR) died 30 December 1917 aged 33. Son of Richard James and Annie Winter; husband of Lucy Amy Cox (formerly, Winter), of The Farmers Arms, Maugersbury, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.


Alfred FOLKES. Private 23203, 1st King's Company, Grenadier Guards died 29 October 1918 aged 31. Husband of Millicent Annie Sysum (formerly Folkes), of 37, Spring Meadow, Lydney, Glos. Born at Broadway. Served in France. At rest in St Eadburgh Churchyard, Broadway, Worcestershire.


Samuel PITMAN. 2/1st Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Discharged from the army 25 August 1915 died of pneumonia at home, November 1915 aged 46. Son of Eli and Susan, nee Shield. Laid to rest 24th November 1915 in St Mary's Churchyard, Frampton on Severn.

Gerald Francis BEASLEY. Private 14610174, 6th York and Lancaster Regiment died 10 February 1944 aged 20. Son of Edward John and Olive Jane Beasley, of Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. At rest in Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.


Rupert James BOWDEN. Sergeant Observer 748589, 99 Squadron Royal Air Force (VR) died 18 December 1940 aged 24. At rest in St John Churchyard, Beck Row, Suffolk.


Charles Edgar John FRYER. Able Seaman D/JX567076 on HMS Kite Royal Navy died at sea 21 August 1944 aged 19. Son of Edgar John and Mary Rosamund Fryer, of Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


Donald James Armitage MacDONALD. Lieutenant 308945, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders attached to Seaforth Highlanders died 26 February 1946 aged 22. Son of Allan Robert Armitage and Nancy Armitage Macdonald, of Saul, Gloucestershire. At rest in Jakarta War Cemetery, Indonesia.


Edward NIBLETT. Guardsman 2738293, 1st Welsh Guards died 20 July 1944 aged 21. Son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Niblett, of Fromebridge, Whitminster, Gloucestershire. At rest in Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery, France.


Thomas Charles SAYERS. Guardsman 2737437, 3rd Welsh Guards died 8 May 1943 aged 31. At rest in Enfidaville War Cemetery, Tunisia.


Michael George St John SEELLY. Flying Officer, Pilot 130960 Royal Air Force (VR) died 10 February 1945 aged 21. Son of Hon. Maj. Edward St. John Seelly, M.B., R.A.M.C., and Vere Adelaide Seelly, of Warboys, Huntingdonshire. At rest in Holmer Cemetery, Holmer and Shelwick, Herefordshire.


Grantley WATHAN. Sergeant 5191114, 10th Gloucestershire Regiment died 23 November 1944 aged 29. Son of William Joseph and Jenny Wathan; husband of Beatrice Wathan, of Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. At rest in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma.


Harry WILKES. D.F.M. Flying Officer, Pilot 156139 Royal Air Force (VR) died 9 June 1944 aged 23. Son of Frederick Thomas Wilkes and Helen Wilkes, of Frampton-on-Severn; husband of Diana Frances Wilkes, of Stratton, Cirencestershire. At rest in St Mary Churchyard, Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire.


Howard SMITH. Leading Aircraftman 166033 Royal Air Force (VR) died 17 February 1945. At rest in St James Churchyard, Quedgeley, Gloucestershire.
