Born 3 January 1917 to Margaret Allan, of Cambois, Northumberland. Died 13th February 1942 aged 25 years as the result of enemy bombing on the island
F087 HARRY BALL. Petty Officer Sick Berth P/M38084 Royal Navy on HMS St.Angelo shore base, Malta Born 8 April 1906 at Dartmouth, Devon to Charles and Kate Ball. 1911 residing with his parents and siblings at 18 Wellington Street, Plymouth. He enlisted into the navy 16 May 1924 on HMS Victory II as Probationary Sick Berth Attendant, civilian occupation, clerk. Died in Royal Naval Hospital, Bighi, Malta 13th February 1942 aged 35 years from injuries received as the result of enemy bombing on the island. At the time of his death he was on HMS Talbot submarine shore base on the Manoel Island in the Marsamxett Harbour opposite Sliema, Malta when the island was hit by enemy bombs. His widow resided at 12 Beaumont Court, Gosport, Hampshire
F087 IVOR CONNELL. Able Seaman C/JX157229 Royal Na HMS Cleopatra. Born 24 September 1921 at Grimsby, Lincolnshire to William and Lily Connell nee Jarvis. Died in Royal Naval Hospital, Malta 14th February 1942 aged 20 years from injuries received in action
14 February 1942 Cruiser HMS Cleopatra and destroyer Fortune were attacked by JU 88 bombers as they headed towards Grand Harbour this morning. Cleopatra was hit by a 500kg bomb which passed through the forward structure and exploded, killing or mortally injuring twenty of the crew. The two ships had made a brave dash through the western Mediterranean via Gibraltar, bringing essential spares to Malta. Despite the bombing, both vessels made it in to harbour where Cleopatra was repaired.
