F005 DAVID ROSS ALLEN, Pilot Officer, 42783, Royal Air Force. 148 Squadron at RAF Luqa, Malta. Born 1917 to John and Mary E. Allen, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. On 23 July 1939 he disembarked at Liverpool from Montreal Canada aged 22, RAF Student. He died from his injuries incurred when his Wellington aircraft (R1094) lost height soon after take-off from RAF Luqa and crashed onto a house in Dun Mario Street, Qormi, Malta bursting into flames during the night of 3rd/4th November 1940 he was aged 23 years.

F005 FRANCIS ROY GROSVENOR. Sergeant, 1266029, Royal Air Force (VR). Died 20th June 1942. He was part of a four-man crew delivering a Lockhead Hudson aircraft to No1 Operational Training Unit (1 OTU) which crashed on the approach to RAF Luqa, the rest of the crew survived.

F005 MAURICE ERNEST TOMKINS Flight Sergeant, Pilot, 1169709, Royal Air Force (VR) 249 Squadron (Spitfire). Born 1920 to Samuel John and Lilian Jane Josephine Tomkins, nee Lee of Weston super Mare, Somerset. In 1911 his parents were residing at 86 Somerset Road, Knowle, Bristol. Died at RAF Ta Qali 25th June 1942 aged 22 years.

The following is credited to Malta War Diary - 1955 hrs. Air raid alert for approaching enemy aircraft. Twelve Spitfires 249 Squadron are scrambled and intercept ME 109 fighters over Gozo. P/O Berkeley probably destroys one; P/O Lattimer destroys two. F/Sgt Tomkins is jumped and shot up over Gozo. He makes it back to Ta Qali but crashes on the aerodrome. His aircraft bursts into flames: he does not survive.


F005 WILFRED JOHN CULBERT, Sergeant, Wireless Operator /Air Gunner, 1260278, Royal Air Force (VR). Born 1923 to Arthur Thomas and Lilian Louisa Culbert, nee Cushings of Crouch Hill, London. His father was serving in the army as Store keeper in the Army Service Corps when he got married to his mother 18 March 1916. Killed on the approach to RAF Luqa, Malta aged 19 years. He was part of a three-man crew delivering and aircraft when it crashed and was destroyed. Pilot Flight Sergeant Docherty was injured, Sergeant Stephen Mathews was killed.

F005 STEPHEN MATTHEWS. Sergeant Observer 1064002, Royal Air Force (VR). Born 1920 to Patrick and Mary Matthews, nee McOwen of Glasgow. Killed on the approach to RAF Luqa, Malta 26th June 1942 aged 22 years. He was part of a three-man crew delivering and aircraft when it crashed and was destroyed. Pilot Flight Sergeant Docherty was injured, Sergeant Wireless Operator Culbert was killed.
