Died on Hospital Ship Maine 26th August 1944 aged 22 years acute anterior poliomyelitis.
The cause of poliomyelitis -
The polio virus usually enters the environment in the faeces of someone who is infected. In areas with poor sanitation, the virus easily spreads from faeces into the water supply, or, by touch, into food. In addition, because polio is so contagious, direct contact with a person infected with the virus can cause polio.

F125 Ernest Peter PICKERILL. Ordinary Seaman P/JX648182 Royal Navy on HMS St. Angelo shore base, Malta. Born 20 November 1923 at Islington, London to Thomas Edward and Eleanor Florence Amelia Pickerill, of Islington, London. Died in 90th General Hospital, Imtarfa, Malta 26th September 1944 aged 20 years of phenol poisoning, terminal bronchopneumonia and pulmonary oedema. Court of enquiry findings. Rating met his death as a result of drinking a quantity of corrosive disinfectant, self-administered, there being no evidence to the contrary and that he was probably in an unbalanced frame of mind. Wills and Admin, Ancestry - His residence was 29 Gerrard Road, Islington, London. His effects went to his mother.
