Esther Sarah ‘Ettie’ BARNETT, Staff Nurse AANS. Massause Corps

Born 21 October 1857 at Dunolly, Victoria, Australia. Married Joel Barnett.
When she joined the army, she was widowed and residing with her son at Maynard Street, South Brisbane.

Died of diabetes 05 March 1921 at Hicks Bay, Gisbourne, New Zealand

Some notes from her service records -
Enlisted 12 August 1915 aged 47 (her correct age was 57) at Brisbane, Queensland Australia post to 6th Australian General Hospital.
21 August 1915 she embarked from Brisbane on HMAT Morea for duty in Wandsworth England. 01 December 1915 she commenced duty at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth. She was transferred 30 October 1916 for duty with 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, England.
20 July 1917 she returned from Dartford England to Australian Imperial Force Headquarters, London, then on Transport duty to Australia05 June 1918 she embarked from Sydney, with Army Massage Service of R.M.S Orontes bound for England via Wellington New Zealand when she was taken ill, sea sickness. On arrival at Wellington, she was seen on shore by S.M.O (Station Medical Officer) Major Humphreys. She was returned at Brisbane 27 July 1918 and resumed duty at 6th Australian General Hospital.

“Was landed in Wellington N.Z. when returning to duty in England owing to bad attack of sea sickness in June 1917. No sugar then present. Was returned to Australia, resumed duty at 6th A G Hospital. Sugar was discovered prior to embarkation 30 September 1918” Disease, Glycosuria

Died of diabetes 05 March 1921 at Hick's Bay, New Zealand
