When the Japanese invaded Hong Kong on 8th December 1941 St Stephen’s College at Stanley was one of the hospitals to which wounded soldiers were taken. (Before the war, it had been a school for boys.) About 6 a.m. on Christmas Day 1941 the Japanese troops entered the hospital. Three nurses were gang raped in the evening of 25-26 December 1941 by Japanese soldiers and then killed possible by bayonet.

Eileen Margaret Begg, nee Cumming. Nurse, Nursing Detachment, Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, murdered.
Born 07 August 1907 at Richmond Surrey to Frederick Alexander and Mabel Cumming.
Wife of Stewart Duncan Begg
She is at rest in Stanley Military Cemetery, Hong Kong.

Her husband, (civilian) survived being a P.o.W. of the Japanese.
He arrived in England 22 October 1945 from Hong Kong, disembarking at Southampton off S.S. Maloja aged 54. His forwarding address was c/o J Thornycroft Co, Smith Square, London, E.C.3.

Henry Thomas Buxton. Lieutenant, 2nd Battery, Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps
Son of Thomas A. Buxton and E. M. Buxton, of City of London. Died on active service in Hong Kong during the defence of the Japanese invasion 18 December 1941 age 38 years. He is at rest in Stanley Military Cemetery, Hong Kong. 6. E. Coll. grave 1-20.

Marjorie Mary Maria Smith, nee Brinnicombe. Nurse,ND/9 Nursing Detachment Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps.
Born 1897 registration district of Lambeth, London to John Richard Moore and Emma Elizabeth Brinnicombe.
1901 with her parents at 23 Crater Road, Lambeth, London. 1911 with her widowed father at 38 Braxted Park, Streatham, London.
She was married in June quarter, 1923 in r/d of Lambeth to Lieutenant Walter John Linday Smith.
Her husband was a P.o.W of the Japanese as Lt Col. was captured 16 December 1942 and was a P.o.W in various camps in Hong Kong for over three and a half years He was liberated 02 September 1945.
