This is a German mobile pillbox. These were transported by horse to the front where they could even be put on a set of rails. I had a chance to see one in the Belgian army museum, and it didn't look very secure - downright claustrophobic, too! While it offered protection from artillery splinters and rifle fire, it wasn't much good in a full-on barrage.
