David Leonard BATES, Petty Officer Torpedo Gunner’s Mate (T.G.M). 180097, Royal Navy on HMS Black Prince. Born 28th March 1878 on Tonbridge, Kent to Raphael Leonard Bates and Charlotte nee Sharp. Enlisted 25th June 1894, occupation prior to enlistment, grocer. Died 7th November 1913 aged 37 years from drowning at Marsamuscetto (Marsamxett) Creek (Harbour). He went on an all night leave on the 6th November 1913 and did not return to his ship. His widow (Charlotte nee Reeves) was informed of his death 8th November 1913.
His memorial was erected by the Officers and Ship's Company of H.M.S. Black Prince as a mark of esteem.
At rest in Plot B Grave 226, Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta.
