David GARDNER

GARDNER, David. Driver T4/161185, Royal Army Service Corps, died 21st October 1916 aged 19. In 1911 he was living with his parents, David and Mary Ann in Didford on Avon and he was working for his father, aged 13 who owned a market garden in the village. He is at rest in St Lawrence Churchyard, Bidford-on-Avon, Warwickshire.

He joined up on the 11th December 1915 and he was posted to Blackheath Camp on the 24th December 1915. About the 10th February 1916 at Blackheath he sustained an injury from a pole which was an a transport waggon to his right hip. He did not report it to the M.O. (Medical Officer) to about a month later when he noticed a large swelling over his hip joint. On examination he had a malignant tumor on his right side which later proved to be sarcoma. He was discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service on the 12th June 1916 from Woolwich Dockyard to his home in High Street, Bidford-on-Avon. "Total incapacity" He died on the 21st October 1916.
