Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up on the 4th September 1914 at Worcester and was posted to 5th Worcestershire Regiment for training. He was aged 35 years and 150 days, He lived with his wife, Myra nee Waldron whom he married in Kidderminster Registry Office in 1907 at 4, Queen Street, Kidderminster. His next of kin was his wife, and his father, Samuel, who was living at Amblecote, Stourbridge. After he had completed his training he was posted to Gallipoli on the 27th April 1916 to join the 12th Worcestershire Regiment. No records have survived of him reporting sick being seen by medical staff while in Gallipoli, but on the 22nd July 1916 he was invalided to India and on the 7th March 1918 posted to Base Depot, Belgaum. Again no records to show what was happening to him while he was India until the 30th April 1918 when he was admitted into the 34th Welsh General Hospital, Deolali suffering from "Bronchitis". He was invalided to England on the 10th December 1918 and he was admitted on the 3rd January 1919 into the Bath War Hospital, Combe Park, very ill, the diagnosis was "Bronchitis" After an examination it was found that he had tenderness over his liver region. On the 14th January 1919 after another examination it was found that he had an abscess which extended behind and above a very hard liver, he was operated on the same day which was a success and great improvement followed. His hand death report written by the hospital physician Thomas Wilson-Smith his very hard to read, but it appears that he had complication with his bowels. He had "diarrhoea supervening" which proved fatal and he died on the 1st February 1919. He military death certificate which is very badly water damaged shows the he died of Abscess to ??.
