SUICIDE IN FLORIANA.
An inquest was held at 9 30 a.m. on Monday, 4th inst. at the Central Hospital, Floriana, on the body of
Gunner Frederick Charles Carrol, aged 20, Royal Marine Artillery, of H.M.S. Theseus, who was found dead from a revolver shot, in a bed room in the Union Jack Hotel, 14 Strada St. Calcedonio, Floriana, at 11. 30 p.m. the previous Saturday evening.
The proceedings were conducted by Magistrate Professor V. Azzopardi, L. L.D., assisted by Professor Sammut, Staff Surgeon Eames, H.M.S. Theseus, and Dr. E. Tabone Engerer.
From the evidence, it appeared that four persons were also in the room at the time of the occurrence, a private of H.M.S. Theseus, a Corporal of the 3rd Royal Warwicks, both of whom were asleep, and unaware that anything unusual was happening. Besides these were 1st Class Leading Stoker Shave, H. M. S. Pyramus, and A. B. Wm. Cheesman of H.M.S. Caesar, who heard the shot, and immediately ran to the suicide's assistance. Beyond the fact that deceased had ordered some stationery which the proprietor was unable to supply, and had afterwards sat on the bed in a melancholy state, there was nothing to explain why the unfortunate man destroyed himself.
A verdict of "suicide while temporarily insane," was returned.
During the afternoon the body of deceased was removed to Bighi, and interred in the Naval cemetery with the customary honours. He was a member of the Church of England.

BLUE JACKETS SUICIDE
A singular ease of suicide is reported from Mediterranean squadron. Frank Salveson, Able seaman on board her Majesty's ship Dido, lying in Malta harbour, was found hanging inside the casing of, the foremost funnel by a piece of lashing torn from his hammock. He had been dead about two hours. At an inquiry held by the captain it was stated that Salveson had complained to an officer that he was suspected of being a Boer spy. The officer gave him a kindle word and dismissed him. Salveson was kept under observation, but as lie gave no signs of mental weakness the incident was forgotten. It was, however, noticed that he read the war news with great interest, and that it made a deep impression on him.
