Lieutenant Cyril William WINTERBOTHAM 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 27th August 1916. He was the son of Reverened John Bernard and Eliza Hunter Winterbotham of Winterbotham, Gurney and Co Cheltenham. At the time of his death his home address was 2, Temple Gardens, Middlesex. In 1891 he was living with his parents at Cranley, Cheltenham. Native of Cheltenham. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

Hugh Gareth THOMAS. 2nd Lieutenant, 8th Gloucestershire Regiment, . Killed in action 30th July 1916, aged 23. Born 1892. Worked for a Cheltenham solicitors. Commissioned September 1915. Killed near Pozieres, the Somme. He was the only son of Walter Jeremy Thomas and Anne Thomas who resided at "Quinta", Hatherley Road, Cheltenham
He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Aged 23 years.

Frederick Alfred COOLE. Lance Sergeant 240178, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Died 21st July 1916. He was born in 1894 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire to Thomas George and Elizabeth Ester . In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at 141, Fairview Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He was at that time working as a clerk for a coal merchant. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Edward GARNER. Sergeant 2535, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 14th August 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Charles Frederick HARRIS. (Military Medal) Sergeant 1139, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 16th August 1916. he was born in Worcester and enlisted in Gloucester. He was the son of Frederick and Emily. In 1911 he is named as Frederick Charles aged 12 and he is living with his parents and siblings at 66, Pound Road, Causeway Green, Langley, Oldbury, Worcestershire. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Reginald Theodore DUNN. Sergeant 1485, South Midland Division, Army Cyclist Corps, formerly 1485, Gloucestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 18th August 1916 aged 24. He was born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire and lived at Pittville Gloucester. He was the brother of Miss Edith Mary Dunn of "Bangalore" Kensington Avenue, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army records
He first joined the army in September 1908 as Private 5581 Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Regiment. Occupation Student, aged 18yrs and 6 months. He lived at 17 Albert Place, Pittsville, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire with his parents Edwin Alfred and Elizabeth and his siblings. He was discharged after the termination of engagement had expired. He then joined the 5th Gloucestershire Regiment on the 3rd June 1911 as Private 1485. He was now aged 21 and 2 months a Teacher working for the Cheltenham Education Committee and still living with his parents and siblings at 17 Albert Place. On the 30th March 1915 he embarked Southampton and disembarked at Le Harve the following day. On the 22nd October 1915 he had field promotion to sergeant and was attached to the Cyclist Corps. 12th July 1916 proceeded to join the 1/6th Royal Warwickshire Regiment on attachment and he was killed in action on the 18th August 1916 whilst serving with the S M D Cyclist Corps.

Alfred William George ENOCH. (Military Medal) Lance Corporal 2528, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 21st July 1916 aged 24. He was in the parish of St Phillip's Cheltenham and was the son of William Charles and Constance Fanny of Camden Cottage, Croft Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at Moorend Villa, Moorend Road, Lechhampton, Gloucestershire and was by trade a carpenter builder along with his father. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Sydney SYSUM. Lance Corporal 2715, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 23rd July 1916 aged 21. He was the son of Charles and Mary of 5, St Mary's Square, Gloucester, Gloucestershire. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Ernest Henry CHESS. Lance Corporal 240910, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment, died 16th August 1916 aged 20. He was the son of George and Mary of 2, Grosvenor Cottages, Grosvenor Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Daniel William SULLIVAN. Corporal 2569, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 21st July 1917 aged 28. He was the son of Daniel and Winnifred Mary of 22, King Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He is at rest in Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme France

George Hume RICKETTS. Corporal 2562, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 21st July 1916. He was born in the parish of St Luke's Cheltenham, Gloucestershire to William Dillon and Ellen of 52, Brighton Road, Cheltenham. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Henry Charles PRICE. Corporal 240322, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. He died on the 21st July 1916. He was born at Badgeworth, Gloucestershire to William and Julia who in 1911 were living as a family at Air Balloon, Crickley, Witcomb, Gloucestershire. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
