This is a British Green Goddess Fire Engine. Picture taken at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, England in 2005. These fire engines remained in use into 2005 during the fire service strikes.

Makes me cry when I see these.
First time was as a young airman in the mid 70's on the first Fireman's strike and then a fews years ago with the other strike.
Ahh, memories! In the late 60's and as teenage shipyard apprentices, a friend and I joined the Auxiliary Fire Service and we trained with one of these every week. During the summer months, the REAL firefighters at the station would sometimes let us go out to deal with grass fires and we thought we were the bees knees! We had to make our way there though, by avoiding any steep gradients, as with a full tank of water, we could get out and walk uphill faster than the machine!
Unfortunately, it was only for about a year, as the AFS was then disbanded. I enjoyed it though and very nearly joined the full-time service.
An iconic vehicle.
