Private 24482414 Linden Colin HOUSTON, 9th County Antrim Battalion. he was shot and mortally wounded at close range by INLA gunmen at his home in Sunnymede Avenue, Dunmurry, Belfast, County Antrim on the 20th January 1984 aged 30, he died in his wife's arms, He had only recently joined the battalion and was still undergoing training at the UDR's Ballykinlar Training Camp.

Sergeant 24199058 Maynard CRAWFORD, 9th County Antrim Battalion. Previously in the B-Specials.
The 13 January 1972 he was shot dead by four PIRA gunmen as he was sat in his van on a building site at Kings Road off the Doagh Road, Newtownabbey County Antrim waiting to take workers home just after 4pm. The gunmen pulled alongside in a dark blue Ford Cortina and fired two shots through the window hitting him in the head, he died instantly aged 38. At rest in Lambeg Churchyard.
He is commemorated on the UDR Memorial, Castle Street, Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, also commemorated on the Ulster Defence Regiment Roll of Honour


Sergeant 23680848 William Joseph REID. 9th County Antrim Battalion.
He died after his gun accidentally went off while he was at the home of a part time soldier 28 May 1972 aged 28. He was from Lisburn County Antrim.

He was shot dead aged 27 by the PIRA as he left his workplace, Autolite factory, Finaghy Road North, Belfast on the 9th June 1972 aged 27 A youth ran and a girl out in front of his car and fired five shots at him, two passengers in the car were injured. He died at the scene and he was off duty.

His body was found by the army in a laneway at the junction of Larkfield Road and Larkfield Drive, Sydenham, East Belfast on the 13th July 1972 at 2am. He was only dressed in his underwear a tie and a scarf was tied around his head and he had been shot.

The 16 January 1973 he was driving his maroon coloured car on the Falls Road Belfast when his car was hijacked by the PIRA outside St John’s Chapel on the Falls Road, Belfast which was to be used for a city centre bombing. He was searched and his Army ID card was found, he was executed. His body was discovered in the boot of his car which had been abandoned in Institution Place, off Durham Street, Belfast He was off duty aged 22.

Private 24301919 Thomas John FORSYTHE. D Coy, 9th County Antrim Battalion Manslaughter, (“Blue-on-Blue”) He was killed whilst on duty by a soldier from an English Regiment 16 October 1973 aged 41.

He was shot dead by two PIRA gunmen one wearing a hood who burst into his home, Lawrence Street, Lurgan, County Armagh on the 29th February 1972 aged 47. His daughter was wounded in the attack. He was shot ten hours after the death of Private Thomas Fletcher.

Private 24199500 Sidney WATT. 2nd UDR. He was mortally wounded by two PIRA gunmen whilst off duty outside his home at Ballintemple near Meigh Co Armagh 20th July 1973 aged 35. At rest in Ballymoner Parish Church, Whitecross. Section G, grave 10.

Police have named the murdered UDR man as Sidney Watt (36), married with four children.
He was ambushed on returning to his farm at Ballintemple, Newtownhamilton after visiting friends. Two gunmen who are thought to have been lying in wait for at least an hour, opened fire with a Thompson sub-machinegun and an M1 carbine. He was struck a number of times and his car was hit eight times. He died while being taken to the Daisy Hill Hospital at Newry. He was a member of the former Special Constabulary. His wife told detectives she had heard the shots and when she looked out saw the gunmen’s car being driven off in the direction of the border.
He was the 35th member of the UDR to have been killed, since the troubles began.

Source for the following Issue 22 The Troubles
The 28 August 1973 he was part of a joint Police UDR mobile patrol when they were attacked by the PIRA at Culdee housing estate, Armagh. while evacuating the area during a bomb alert. He was killed and two others slightly injured a 24 year old corporal in the UDR, is shot dead in a gun battle with the Provisional IRA in the Culdee area of the city. Two other were injured one UDR and the other a policeman.

Corporal 24199416 Robert James FRAZER possible k/a James Albert FRAZER, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was ambushed and shot dead by the PIRA while driving from his friends farm at Ballymoyer near Whitecross, County Armagh on the 30th August 1975 aged 49.
He was off duty. At rest in Ballymoyer Parish churchyard, Newtownhamilton, County Armagh in Section F, grave 12.

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS BRIEF - 30/31 August 1975 (1) An off duty UDR solider received a GSW to the head when ambushed 5 miles North East of Newtownhamilton. He died later in Newry hospital.
He was driving on to the road outside a friend's house when one of 2 men, armed with a rifle, fired at him. He was taken out of his car and left on the side of the road. The men then drove the car, a Hillman Hunter away in a southerly direction.
FRASER was taken to the DAISEY HILL Hospital NEWRY where he died at approximately 2200 hours
Other information on the internet refer to him as Robert James Frazer.


Lance Corporal 24275157 Joseph REID. 2nd County Armagh Battalion. Murdered by a PIRA gunman 31 August 1975 at his farm in Farnaloy, Madden near Keady Armagh aged 46. At rest in Temple Cemetery, Keady. Grave number 16.
Commemorated on a tree memorial plaque, UDR Memorial Ulster Ash Grove National Memorial Arboretum Alrewas Staffordshire.

He was a farmer and the Official Unionist representative for the Keady area on Armagh District Council. He was on his way to bed when there was a knock on the door of his home. His daughter answered and as he walked to the door a lone gunman fired two or three shots at him. Mr Reid managed to stagger to the kitchen before collapsing in a pool of blood. He died a few minutes later.

A 59-year-old part time member of the UDR was shot dead in an ambush in South Armagh. The man Mr John Bell was driving home from work when gunmen opened fire on the vehicle from close range. The car went out of control and crashed into a ditch at Ballymoyer, near
Newtownhamilton.

Staff Sergeant 24205988 John NESBITT, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was shot dead by three PIRA gunmen in his car outside Gough British Army Base, Carramoyle, near Keady, County Armagh waiting to be let in for duty 10 November 1975, aged 54. At rest in St Mathews Parish churchyard, Keady, County Armagh. Grave 130

Private 24140085 David Weir McDOWELL, 2nd county Armagh Battalion.
Who resided at Alexander Park, Armagh.
He was accidentally shot dead (Accidental discharge) when he stopped his bus to talk to soldiers at an army Vehicle Check Point – Observation Post near the border at Middletown, manned by the Queen’s Dragoon Guards on the 25th January 1976 aged 26 when a 19 year old soldier accidental shot him dead. He had previously been attacked by the PIRA 3 years earlier in which he had been injured.

Mr David McDowell,a UDR member and father of five was shot dead when a soldier’s
machine gun went off accidentally and hit him as he stood talking to other soldiers on a bus. The safety catch was not engaged.

Private 24199426 Joseph Alexander McCULLOUGH, 2nd County Armagh Battalion.
He was stabbed to death by an PIRA unit while arriving to his farm at Tullyvallen, near Newtownhamilton, County Armagh 26 February 1976. He was off duty aged 56. At rest in Presbyterian reform Church, Tullyvallen, Newtownhamilton, County Armagh.

A 57 year old UDR man was found shot dead in the laneway to his South Armagh farmhouse. He had a number of bullet wounds and was named as Mr Joseph McCullough who farmed at
Tullyvallen.

Lance Corporal 448719 Gillian Jean Barbara LEGGETT, nee Douglas
Born in the Registration District of Bristol September quarter 1943
. 2nd UDR. formerly (WRAC) Women’s Royal Army Corps and came from Lienthall Earls near Leominster. She was shot in the back the head by an PIRA sniper attack while on a two-vehicle mobile patrol at Ashford near Middletown, County Armagh the 6 April 1976, she died at the scene aged 33. She was in second Land Rover caught in the gunfire. The gunmen who had been lying in wait fired forty shots at the vehicle. The driver was struck in the leg by a bullet, lost control, crashed and overturned the gun men kept firing at the Land Rover.
She joined the UDR 18 months ago shortly after arriving in the Province with her husband who was a Staff Sergeant attached on a full time basis to the regiment’s headquarters at Gough Military Barracks in Armagh. She was returned home to be laid to rest in Saint Andrews Churchyard Leinthall Earls, Leominster.

Corporal 24199313 Robert William McCONNELL, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was shot dead by the PIRA outside his home at Tullyvallen on the 5th April 1976 aged 32 At rest in Newtownhamilton Church of Ireland Cemetery, County Armagh.

A UDA man shot dead in Newtownhamilton was named as Mr Robert McConnell aged 32 of Tullyvallen. He was walking across a lane outside his farm when he was shot in the head and he died on arrival at hospital. Mr McConnell worked at the White, Tomkins and Courage factory at Tandragee and was a member of the Orange Order. He was also a part time member of the UDR.

Lieutenant 4889769 Joseph WILSON, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was shot dead on the 26th October 1976 aged 53 by an PIRA gunman as he worked in a supermarket in the nationalist Shambles area of Armagh.

The killer asked for an item and then shot Joseph in the back 3 times as he turned to get it. Married with 9 children. He had worked there for over 20 years and had survived an assassination attempt just 1 year earlier. At rest in Knappagh churchyard, County Armagh.

Private (Part time) 448108 Margaret Ann HEARST, 2nd County Armagh Battalion.
Shot dead by PIRA on the 8th October 1977 aged 24. She was the 3rd Greenfinch to be murdered and she a single mother and had been a member of the regiment for four years. Two PIRA gunmen had taken hostage her grandmother and young brothers at gunpoint. They waited for Margaret to return to her mobile home, when she did the PIRA burst into her mobile home situated in her garden of her parents home at Doogary, near Tynan South Armagh and sprayed her bedroom with ten shots from an automatic weapon instantly killing her as she lay in bed.
Her 3-year-old daughter narrowly escaped death when a bullet went through the toy Kermit the Frog she had been cuddling. Her PIRA killers returned to bring more tragedy when they murdered her father in his home. She was employed as a civilian clerk on a full time bases at the 2nd Volunteer Armagh Battalion Headquarters. (No burial location was given)


Captain 489872 Charles HENNING, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He died of his wounds on the 6th October 1978 aged 51 four days after he was shot while off duty by the PIRA in a cattle market at Patrick Street, Newry, County Down . At rest in Jerrettspass Presbyterian Churchyard. County Armagh.

Lance Corporal 24205691 Thomas John (Tommy) ARMSTRONG, 2nd county Armagh Battalion. He was off duty when he was shot and killed by the PIRA near his home at Tynan, County Armagh on the 13th April 1979 aged 63. At rest in Lislooney Presbyterian Churchyard, Tynan, County Armagh.


Private 24199275 Joseph James PORTER, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was shot dead by the PIRA near his home at Mountnorris, County Armagh, on the 24th June 1979 aged 64, he was off duty. At rest in Tyrones Ditches Presbyterian Churchyard, County Armagh

Private 242447 Marcus James HEWITT, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. Killed in a booby trap bomb which had been attached to his car whilst he was at Tandragee cattle market County Armagh on the 10th October 1980 aged 47. At rest in Kilmere Parish Churchyard, grave 53.

Lance Corporal 24273690 Frederick A WILLIAMSON. 2nd County Armagh Battalion.
Shot dead by INLA sniper while driving to work at Kilmore County Armagh, 7 October 1982 aged 33. His car went out of control and hit 28 year old Prison Officer, Elizabeth Chambers’ car coming in the opposite direction causing her death. She had been on her way to work in the Armagh women's prison. A car used by the killers was later found in the Mullacreevie estate on the edge of Armagh city. He resided at Orangefield Drive, Armagh city.
He is at rest in St Marks Church Cemetery. Armagh. Section, Hollow grave 6.

Private 24482422 Derek James GEORGE. 2nd UDR. Accidentally shot while on duty, 17 October 1982. At rest in Redrock Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Armagh.

Sergeant 24199420 Thomas George COCHRANE, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. Was abducted by the PIRA on his way to work at Glennane, near Markethill, County Armagh 24 October 1982. Found shot dead at Lislea, near Camlough, County Armagh, seven days later on 29 October 1982 aged 55. His body showed signs of having been beaten. Corporal 24199668 Charles Hutton SPENCE, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was shot dead by the PIRA when his left his workplace, Customs House, Armagh on the 10th November 1982 aged 44, he was of duty. At rest in Mullabrock Parish Churchyard, Markethill, County Armagh.


Corporal 23205240 Austin SMITH, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was shot dead by the PIRA as he returned to his home at Windmill Avenue, Armagh after finishing duty at Drumadd Barracks on the 20th December 1982 aged 44. At rest in St Patricks Catholic Cemetery, Armagh Section 1768 grave C12

Major 489402 Frederick Charles ARMSTRONG, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. He was killed by a booby trap bomb as he sat outside the District Council Offices, The Palace Demesne, Armagh. The bomb was attached to his car by the PIRA. He was an Ulster Unionist Party Councillor and he was attending a meeting in the District Council Offices, Armagh on the 14th November 1983 aged 54. He was off duty. At rest in St Mark's Churchyard Victoria Street Armagh

Private 24668399 Stephen McKINNEY. 2nd County Armagh Battalion. Shot by two PIRA gunmen, early Sunday 25 September 1988. He was returning home from duty with the Ulster Defence Regiment when he was caught in a hail of more than 40 bullets between his car and his rural home outside at Cabragh off Loughall Road, Armagh, He died on his way to hospital at 1 a.m. aged 22. The gunmen escaped across nearby fields.

Lance Corporal 24273742 Samuel David HALLIGAN, 2nd County Armagh Battalion. on the 17th November 1989 aged 57. He had left Drumadd Army Base and was ambushed by PIRA gunmen shot him 37 times mortally wounding him as he parked his car near his home on the Hamiltonsbawn Road, Armagh. He got out of his car and stagger toward his home before collapsed and passed away.

Corporal 24635221 Samuel James McCHESNEY. 2nd UDR (Part time). Murdered by Loyalist Terrorist, Red Hand Commandos, 12 March 1990 aged 25 at his home in East Belfast. He was beaten and died in hospital from his injuries because they thought he was giving information to the RUC. At rest in Roselawn Cemetery Ballygown Road, Belfast. Grave Section ? Grave1952.

Private 24787290 Alexander James PHOENIX. 2nd UDR. Knocked down and killed at a VCP, 16 March 1990 aged 19. At rest in Castlecaulfield Cemetery, Dungannon Co Tyrone

The following were both caught in a PIRA horizontal mortar attack while on mobile patrol on the 4th March 1991 on the Killylea Road, Armagh.

1 March – 24-year-old Paul Sutcliffe, who came from Lancashire in England, and 20-year-old Roger Love, from Richhill, both members of the UDR, were killed when the Provisional IRA ambushed their patrol on the Killylea Road, about half a mile from the site of an IRA bomb attack which had killed three RUC officers and a nun the previous year. Their armoured Land Rover was hit with a horizontal-firing homemade mortar bomb after it had stopped at temporary traffic lights at the bottom of the Mullacreevie housing estate. Private Love died from his injuries on 4 March. The incident became known as the Mullacreevie Ambush.

A triple murderer who gunned down his police officer father and a married couple almost 20 years ago has died after taking ill in Maghaberry Prison.
Portadown man Mark Maginnis (40) died in hospital on Monday morning after being transferred from Maghaberry on Sunday afternoon.

Maginnis was jailed for life in 1992 after he was convicted of the murder of his 47-year-old father, RUC Constable Alfred Maginnis, and the murders of his lover Sandra Brown (29) and her husband Jeffrey (30) on April 30, 1991.
The murderer, who was 20 at the time of the killings, shot all three at close range with his father’s police-issue revolver.
He killed his father at the family’s home at Five Acres in Portadown before driving a short distance to shoot the Browns in their house in Kensington Park.
After the murders Maginnis returned to his family home to reload the gun and collect money before driving to Larne, where he was later arrested after a high-speed car chase
During his trial the court was told that he had carried out the murders because he had heard from his father that his lover Mrs Brown had made an offensive remark about him.
He got into a row with his father before shooting him in the chest. As his father lay injured on the ground asking for a doctor he shot him in the head.
At his trial a QC described him as being “absolutely deranged” and said that when he was aged just 16 he had pointed a shotgun at his mother and threatened to “blow her away”.

The PIRA launched a large truck bomb attack on a British Army (Ulster Defence Regiment) base at Glenane County Armagh the 31 May 1991.
Three UDR soldiers (Lance Corporal Robert Crozier and Privates Paul Blakely and Sydney Hamilton) were killed; ten soldiers and four civilians were wounded. The lorry packed with a 2,000lb bomb was rolled down a hill towards the army base. It was largest bomb ever the PPPIRA ever used. The blast left a deep crater and it could be heard over 30 miles away. Most of the UDR base was destroyed by the blast and the fire that followed. It was one of the largest bombs detonated during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
