Italy September 1943. United States Army vehicles of the 817th Engineer Aviation Battalion roll off an LST ramp during landing operations in Italy. Troops stand on the deck of the ship. The USAAF Spitfire lying nose-down in the surf was mistakenly shot down by US AA. According to the USAAF, the pilot suffered only 'a scratch on the back of his hand.'
