Entrance is to a Nazi underground fortress in Cherbourg is shown after the Germans surrendered the city June 27, 1944. It was here that Lieutenant General Carl Wilhelm von Schliehen, Commander of the Nazi garrison at Cherbourg, and Rear Admiral Hennecke, Nazi Sea Defense Commander of Normandy, gave themselves up a day before the general surrender. Twenty-thousand Nazis were taken prisoner at Cherbourg. Originally a U.S. Army Signal Corps photograph: ETO-HQ-44-6049-34.
