The gun truck was developed during the Vietnam War to provide support for military convoys against Viet Cong and NVA ambushes. The guntrucks were based on the M35 two and a half ton transport lorries and were largely constructed in the field by their crews, salvaging weapons from destroyed vehicles.
The crews began to decorate their vehicles in the style of Second World War bombers and with associated names.
