Eisenhower's Send-Off

This picture was taken at Greenham Common Airfield, England, at about 8:30PM 5JUN44 just before these paratroopers of Easy Company, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, were to board the plane that they were to make their night jump out of over France, kicking off the D-Day Invasion. The #23 around the officer's neck identifies which plane they were assigned to. Some brave men.
A very famous photo - for us Brits, Greenham Common became the torch for the far left and the CND people (US cruise missiles based there). I used to drive past there on army duty every now and then and always found time to give the hippies the finger!!
