EVANS John. Private, 12411, 2nd Garrison Battalion, The King’s Liverpool Regiment. Died of malaria, 22nd March 1918, aged 47 years. The son of the late Benjamin and Ellen Evans, of Liverpool.
COLE Albert William. Gunner, 961053, 302nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died on board the hospital ship, Kalyan at Malta 16th March 1918, aged 25 years. The son of Mrs. Agnes Butcher, of The Lodge, Temple Sheen, East Sheen, London. He formerly lived at Furness Lodge Stables, Stanley Road, East Sheen, Surrey.
MARTIN Robert Hugh. Private, 75965, 1st/1st Derbyshire Yeomanry. He died at St Elmo Hospital, Valetta after surviving a complex heart operation by Sir Charles Ballance and Dr Marguerite White, to have a rifle bullet removed from his right ventricle with forceps , but sadly died from infection as antibiotics had not been invented 14th March 1918, aged 21 years. He was the first person in the world to have a heart operation. The son of Harry and Jeanetta Martin, of Glenbourne, Totley Rise, Sheffield.
