Charles Alec WARD Son of Sergeant 6971 Charles Henry George Ward , 2nd Devonshire Regiment and Bessie Irene nee Street. Died 21st July 1910 at Malta and is at rest in an unmarked burial in Pembroke Military Cemetery, Malta.

Father -Charles Henry George WARD, aged 25 years, bachelor, Sergeant, 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, the son of George Joseph Ward, married 14th January 1910 to, Bessie Irene STREET, aged 22 years, spinster, from Exeter, Devon, the daughter of Horatio Street deceased.

He was born in 1884 at Exeter and was the son of George Joseph and Charlotte Louisa who in 1901 aged 16 were all living at 67 Oxford Road, Exeter, Devon. He was as a solicitor’s clerk. His medal card shows his rank C.Q.M.S and WO2 (C.S.M.) He had the Victory, British 1914 Star medals for service in the Great War. Charles Henry George Ward was born on the 26 June 1884 and died 24 February 1973. He was living at 156 Sherwell Valley Road, Chelston, Torquay, Devon.

Mother – Bessie Irene was born in 1887 at Exeter, Devonshire to Horatio and Bessie nee Drake. In 1901 she was living with her widowed mother and siblings at 6 Silver Road, Exeter, Devonshire.

Some additional information about his parents

His father was born 1884 at Canton, Glamorganshire to Richard Frederick and Catherine Wilson. In 1901 he was living with his parents at 87 Daisy Street, Canton, Glamorganshire, occupation grocers apprentice. 19 December 1914 he was serving the 2nd Glosters in France. Medal card shows he was Sergeant and the Warrant Officer II.

His mother was born in 1888 at Cardiff, Glamorganshire and was the daughter of Joseph and Jane Alice Fido nee Birkby. In 1901 she was living with her parents at 72 Waterchurch Road, Cardiff. Her father died in 1934 and her mother died 1964 both in Gloucester City, Gloucestershire. She had a sister Neta Annie May who was born and baptised in Malta in 1912.

Joseph Fido was born in 1855 joined aged 21 and 12 months into the Royal Horse Artillery as a driver at Woolwich on 9 September 1876 and given the number of 3360, later changed to 1840. His occupation prior to enlistment farm labourer, groom, and living with his parents Joseph and Ann at Kings Caple, Herefordshire. He served in India from 17 November 1877 to 24 May 1880 then returned to home posting. Fought in the Afghanistan Campaign 1878 - 1880. In 1883 he was stationed at Portobello Barracks Rathmines , Dublin with K Battery, A Brigade Royal Horse Artillery as bombardier 1840.

On 15th September 1883 he got into a bit of bother. He was posted at 8 pm to ‘Avenue Duty’ to finish at 12 midnight. Between the hours of 10 and 11 pm he was caught drunk on duty by the duty sergeant and was promptly arrested and taken to the guard house. He was later placed on notice to appear before a Regimental Court Martial (like C. O’s Orders) The trial started at the barracks on 17th September and he was found guilty as charged on 18th September 1883 and was reduced to ranks forthwith. While he was in the army, he was married on 22 January 1883 to Jane Alice Birkley (born in Malta) at St Martins Church, Hereford. (To the present 2016, this church is still being used by the military. 22 Regiment has a large stained window). On 9th September 1888 he was discharged from the army after serving 12 years on the termination of his period of engagement.

On 18th September 1914 aged 59 and 11 months he joined the Royal Field Artillery as driver 17962. He was living with his wife and family still at Kings Caple, occupation groom and placed was placed on home duty at the barracks. He was discharged from the army as medically unfit on 2nd January 1918 after serving 3 years and 107 days. (A true military man).

Winifred Eunice Poppy MELHUISH, daughter of Lance-Sergeant 7925 Sidney Melhuish, 2nd Devonshire Regiment and Violet Irene C nee Baker. Winnifred Eunice Poppy aged 4 months born at Pembroke, Malta and died 19 August 1911.

At rest in an unmarked grave in Pembroke Military Cemetery, Malta.

In 1911 the family were in Malta the children were as follows, Albert Victor and Lilian Irene both aged 2 (1909) and born in Devonport. Sidney James aged 3 (1908) born at Devonport. Medal Rolls Index 1914-1920 on Ancestry shows her father as the rank of Warrant Officer Class Two with the 2nd and 8th Devonshire Regiment. Medals, British War Medal and Victory Medal
