Charles Meredith PENLY. Lance Corporal, Cadet R.A.F at RAF Denham, Buckinghamshire. Lance Corporal 23041 Gloucestershire Regt). Born 5 August 1894 to Charles Meredith and Ada Ann nee Fowler of Long Street, Wotton-under-Edge. 1901 residing with his parents and siblings at Sym Lane, Wotton-under-Edge. 1911 residing with his parents and siblings at Church Street, Wotton-under-Edge, occupation, working for his father as a pyrotechnists maker. Later resided at Coombe Road Wootton under Edge.
He joined the Gloucestershire Regiment the 8 June 1915 at Horfield Barracks, (Depot), Horfield, Bristol aged 20 years and 9 months, occupation, pyrotechnic. After his training posted to the 3rd Battalion. Posted to France 27 October 1915, wounded by shell shrapnel to head and back (minor) on the 27 November 1915. (No record found as to what treatment he received). osted to U.K., 11 April 1916.. Promoted to Lance Corporal 25 February 1917, transferred as Cadet, Lance Corporal to No 5 School of Aeronautics, (formerly Military Aeronautics) Royal Air Force at RAF Denham, 12 December 1918. Discharged from the army as Class Z (Army Reserve) 29 February 1919 to Wotton-under-Edge. He died at Bristol Royal Infirmary 10 August and laid to rest 16th August 1928 Age 34. At rest in grave 204, Wotton-under-Edge Cemetery, Gloucestershire.
