Lieutenant Colonel in the Rifle Brigade. On retirement he joined the 2nd Derbyshire Militia, late to become the Sherwood Foresters, transferred into the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment in 1888. He was the son of William 7th Duke of Devonshire and Blanche Georgina.

His brother Frederick Charles, Chief Secretary for Ireland was murdered within twelve hours of landing in the Phoenix Park, Dublin 6th May 1882 aged 45
