Caroline Mary ENNIS. Nursing Sister VFX 38751 AANS attached to 10th Australian General Hospital.

Born 13 August 1913 at Swan Hill, Victoria to Hugh Martin Ennis and Mary Josephine Ennis, of Moyhu, Victoria, Australia.

Her mother, then Mary Josephine Graham c/o Chestnut Post Office, Victoria, Australia was her next of kin.

Some notes from her service records -
Enlisted 20 August 1940 at Cheshunt, Victoria and was attached to 10th A.G.H.
01 February 1941 she embarked Sydney on HMS Queen Mary bound for Singapore, with 10th A.G.H., disembarking at Singapore 18 February 1941
29 May 1942 granted leave from 0700 to 2359hrs 31 May 1951.
Granted leave from 12 June 1941 to 14 June 1941.
19 July 1941 detached to 2/9 Field Ambulance for duty.
31 August 1941 attached to 10 A.G.H.
Granted leave 22 October 1941 to 28 October 1941
06 January 1942 detached to 2/4th Australian Casuality Clearing Station
11 January 1942 promoted to Sister, Grade 01.
17 January 1942 rejoined unit (10. A.G.H.) from 2/9 C.C.S.
11 February 1942 embarked with 10th A G H bound for Australia.
Reported missing, presumed killed after 11 February 1942 she was aged 28.

Lost at sea 14 February 1942 SS Vyner Brooke Banka Island East Indies.

Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, at Kranji War Cemetery. Singapore.

Also included in the Nurses’ War Memorial Chapel in Westminster Abbey, London

Of the 65 nurses who left Singapore on ‘SS Vyner Brooke’, 12 drowned, 21 were murdered on Radji Beach, and 32 were taken Prisoner of War (POW). 8 of these subsequently died in captivity. The remaining 24 were later rescued and returned to Australia.
