August 1940. Showman's daughter killed in air raid.
"We deeply regret to announce the death of Miss Carrie BOND 19 years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred BOND junior, the well known London traveller.
During a lightning day light raid by the enemy, in south-west London, Miss Bond who was engaged in night working at a munitions factory was sleeping, when the air raid warning was given. During the few seconds it took for her sister Amy to reach the wagon the aircraft commenced a bomd attack and dropped high explosive bombs in close vicinity of Mrs Bond's yard and demolished a house.
Whilst Miss Amy Bond was making vain attempts to reach her Sister, another bomb dropped a few feet from the wagon. The German bombe crew not content with bombing civilians, they deliberately raked the whole yard with machine gun fire. Miss Bond was killed by one of these bullets and her Mother was wounded. I counted 17 bullet holes in the side of the van where she had been sleeping. I am please to relate Miss Amy Bond escaped injury.
Miss Grace Bond did not have time to get to her wagon, but flung herself underneath is as large shed collapsed opposite. A car wheel that had been lying around hurtled through the air and struck her shoulder, which was badly bruised. Other wagons were riddled with bullets and damaged by shrapnel. Sister of James Bond of the London Section.
