Killed RAFC Oxford AB766, crashed at 1650hrs near Cranwell South when it collided with a drogue cable after takeoff. It became fouled around the starboard wing causing the pilot to lose control of the aircraft. LAC Fred Hughes was killed in the crash.

He trained at Blackpool and was posted to Bobbington arifield of 400 acres at Bobbington South Staffordshire. On the 29th June 1941 day after he qualified as air gunner, wirless operator he was taken for his first training flight. The pilot got into difficulties on take off and crashed onto golf course. He died along with another crewman the others survived. He was cremated at Carmountside, Stoke on Trent.

He died along with LAC (U/T Pilot) 1060860 Peter William Sampson. RAFVR aged 20 son of Peter and Jessie Sampson of Bedington, Cheshire. Both were in Master Miles Master N7490 training aircraft of 5FTS (Flying Training School) hit a wire fence while low flying and crashed at Tarporley, Cheshire. Both received fatal injuries
