There was bitter fighting between Italian and Austrian troops along the Isonzo River in WW1. Italy fared poorly at first with Austrians capturing much equipment and weaponry. Captured rifles were sent to an armory where they were inspected to ensure they were fit for use. Those passing the inspection were stamped with "AZF" = "artillery zeugs fabric".
Over 60,000 troops of both sides perished in avalanches alone. A friend who lives in the region tells me if you hike into the former war zone, equipment can still be found laying around. A few years ago, an Italian soldier's remains were found in the ice where he had fallen so many years ago.
