In 1938, the M38 short rifle was adopted for service. It took a different (and worse!) bayonet. There are 4 types of M38 bayonet. The first - not shown because I've never found one I could afford - was a folding bayonet with a lever latch to release the blade to be folded. Type 2 (at top here) was a folder with a simpler button blade release. This was a bad design.
So much so that Type 3 (middle) was made of folder parts but welded up to be a fixed bayonet. Bottom is a type 4 which was made up as a dedicated fixed bayonet.
