1914-1918
APPLETON William. Private 7227, 9th Durham Light Infantry died 25th January 1917 aged 21. Born at Melbecks, lived at Aysgarth both in Yorkshire. Son of George and Margaret Appleton, of Dyke Heads, Gunnerside, Richmond, Yorks.
At rest in St. Roch Communal Cemetery, Nord France.

BANKS William. Private 41035 1st East Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 10th September 1918 aged 19. Son of William and Margaret A. Banks, of Cringley, Askrigg, Yorkshire. In this church St Oswalds Church there is a stained glass commemorated to him. His father was granted a war gratuity on the 31st May 1920. At rest in Gouseaucourt New British Cemetery, Nord France

CHAPMAN James. Private 31388 21st (memorial has 25th) Manchester Regiment fell in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, France 1st July 1916 aged 22. Son of Alexander and Mary Chapman, of Sunny Dene, Bainbridge, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

DINSDALE Frank 2nd Lieutenant, 12th Yorks and Lancaster Regiment died 1st July 1916. son of James and Sarah Dinsdale. In 1901 he was living with his parents at Litherskew, High Abbotside, Yorkshire . At rest in Queens Cemetery, Puisieux, France

HORN John William. Private 51676, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died 27th September 1916 aged 20. Son of Jeremiah H. and Margaret Ann Horn, of Burtersett, Hawes husband of Jane Ann Horn, of Burtersett, Hawes, Yorkshire.
Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

KIRKBRIDE James Private 44445, 3rd Essex Regiment died 24th October 1920 age 25. Son of Thomas and Margaret Kirkbride, of Town Head Farm, Askrigg.

LODGE Bernard Grime. Mentioned in Despatches. 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Durham Light Infantry attached to the 10th Battalion killed in action 24th August 1917 aged 23. Son of John James Grime Lodge, of Askrigg, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen Belgium.

METCALFE John James. Private 501359 Labour Corps, formerly Driver 061410 Army Service Corps. He was discharged from the army on the 21st March 1918 and died 25th March 1918. Son of Mary Alice Metcalfe, of Quaker Terrace, Masham, Ripon, Yorks. His mother Mary A was granted a war gratuity on the 14th November 1918 revised 12th June 1919. Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined the Army Service Corps on the 19th February 1915 aged 19 and 2 months at Leyburn as driver 061410 . He gave his father, (no name) of Main Street, Askrigg as his next of kin he also resided at this address. Later he gave his mother Mary Alice, same address as his next of kin. His occupation prior to enlistment was a farm labourer. On the 24th February 1915 he embarked from Avonmouth on Dunluce Castle for Egypt. On the 28th March 1915 disembarked at Alexandria. On the 28th August 1915 he left Alexandria for Gallipoli on ship)can not make out what the name was, Nitouian!!) On the 13th September 1915 he was temporary attached to 4 Coy, 29 Divisional Train, Gallipoli. He reported sick with dysentry at Gallipoli on the 11th September 1915 and was treated at 71 Casualty Clearing Station, same day transferred to 88 Casualty Clearing Station. The following day he was transferred to 2nd Australian General Hospital at Mudros. 18th September 1915 invalided to England on Hospital Ship, Aquitania No record was found at to name of the medical facility he was treated at. On the 16th March 1917 he was transferred 502 Coy Army Service Corps Codford, Wiltshire from No 1 Depot Southport. 28th May 1917 transferred to No2 Reserve Horse Transport Depot Blackheath From there he was transferred 4th Northamptonshire Regiment and then transferred to the 474 Agricultural Coy Labour Corps as private 501359. On the 28th November 1917 he was admitted into York Military Hospital suffering from tuberculosis of the lung While in hospital he was on a medical board on the 17th February 1918. His disability (TB) originated at Aldershot two rear ago. He was discharged from the hospital on the 25th February 1918 and returned to his unit and discharged from the army at Nottingham as being physically unfit for war service on the 21st March 1918. He died on the 25th March 1918.

METCALFE Robert Pickering. Rifleman R/24155 8th Kings Royal Rifle Corps died 24th August 1917 aged 24. Son of Mr. and Mrs. George Metcalfe, of Ashfield House, Thornton Rush, Aysgarth, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

MITTON John Private 30383, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment died 9th April 1917 aged 40. Son of Warren and Helen Mitton husband of Mary Teresa Mitton, of Hill Top, Leyburn, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was living with his wife and two children at Finghall Constable Burton, Yorkshire occupation, rural postman. At rest in Neuville-Vitasse Road Cemetery, France

MUDD Robert. Company Sergeant Major 35532, 10th West Yorkshire Regiment died 13th April 1917 aged 37. Son of Edward and Margaret Mudd, of Masham, Ripon; husband of Mary Jane Heslop (formerly Mudd), of Red Lane, Masham, Ripon, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

MILLER Thomas. Private 30292, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 17th April 1918 aged 19. Son of G. C. and Margaret Miller, of Wood Hall, Aysgarth, Yorkshire. Born and lived at Askrigg. At rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

PRESTON James Graham. Private 22738, 18th Lancaster Fusiliers formerly 165297 Royal Field Artillery died of wounds 2nd November 1917 aged 20 Son of James and Margaret Ann Preston, of Askrigg, Yorkshre. At rest in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France

WEBSTER William Hunter Tomlinson Gunner 696260, Z, 57th Trench Motar Battery, Royal Field Artillery died of wounds 5th August 1917 native of Askrigg. Son of John A and Jane Webster, of Nappa Scarr, Aysgarth, Yorkshire. His father was granted a war gratuity on the 12th December 1917 revised on the 10th December 1919.
