Sergeant 12172, Arthur William SPENCER. DCM . Born at Crudwell, near Malsbury, Wiltshire in 1892. Joined the Glosters as a volunteer in August 1914 and was posted to the A Companty, 8th Glosters. By March 1918 he was now a sergeant and he was severely wounded in the right thigh. He was discharged from the army on the 25th November 1918. He served in WW2 as an Air Raid Warden with the Local Defence Volunteers, later the Home Guard on its formation in 1940. He died on the 21st April 1967 aged 70. He was living with his Clara nee Bick (who he married in 1923 at Newent, Gloucestershire) at 10 Craig Park Circle, Newport, Monmouthshire, South Wales.

He took out a Lew gun in front of the newly captured line to enfilade the Sunken Road. Under heavy shelling and machine gun fire he maintained his position until only one man was left with him, firing up the road and doing considerable execution. He displayed courage and coolness of a high order and brought his gun back with him.
