"Ste-Mere-Eglise" by Tom Freeman Paratroopers descending on the first town to be liberated on D-day June 6, 1944 Ste-Mere-Eglise was the first town in France to be liberated on June 6, 1944. The town had been occupied by the german forces since June 18th, 1940. Not only was the town made famous for being the first town liberated on D-Day, but also by a paratrooper John Steel whose parachute was caught in the church steeple. He was captured by the Germans and later released.
