Alice SLINGSBY, nee Lock. Died 9th November 1915 aged 36 of dysentery at the Military Families Hospital, Malta, (Former Station Hospital, Valletta. ). Wife of Staff Sergeant 970 Charles William Edward (known as Charles) Slingsby, Army Pay Corps. Our token of affection to a dear wife and mother.

Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined up the 14th October 1901 and was posted to the Suffolk Regiment Depot as Private 6503. He was aged 24 years and 9 months, occupation, bookkeeper, he was transferred to the Army Pay Corps, Dorchester the next day as Private 970, promoted to corporal on the 15th October 1902 after completing 1 years service. The 16th October 1904 he extended his service to complete 12 years with the colours. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 15th October 1904, Sergeant on the 15th October 1907. He was permitted to re-engage to complete 21 years with the colours on the 2nd November 1911, promoted to Staff Sergeant on the 1st June 1914, and to WO1 (Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant) on the 1st June 1917. On the 21st March 1912 he was posted to Old Laboratory Barracks Valletta. Malta, which included war service. He left Malta on the 30th August 1916 and was posted back to England. He fought in the South African War (Boer War) from 1900 - 1901 and with the Expeditionary Force in Malta. He was awarded the South African Medal with one clasp, Cape Colony. Good Conduct and Long Service Medals, and the British War Medal.
He was married twice. First on the 20th October 1902 at Christ Church, West Fordington, Dorsetshire, to Alice Lock aged 23, spinster, living at 26 Great Western Road, He was aged 25, soldier at the Army Pay Corps Depot, Dorchester, son of John Slingsby.
Children of the union were Doris Kathleen, born at Dorchester 7th September 1903, baptised on the 25th October 1903 and Kate Irene Ethel, born 20th January 1915 at Dorchester.
His second marriage was on the 7th August 1917 at Bath to Teresa Callaway, spinster.
Charles William Edward Slingsby died on the 7th October 1940 aged 63 at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exteter. He was living at 14 College Avenue, Exeter. His effects went to his daughter Dorthoy Kathleen Weston, wife of Thomas Bailey Weston.
