TOWNSEND Alfred Private 7663 Royal Army Medical Corps died 22nd October 1918 aged 26. He was son of Edward and Catherine of Temple Bar, Willenhall the husband of Sarah Roberts, formerly Townsend, of 35, Gospel End, Sedgley, Dudley. He is at rest in Bentley Cemetery, Willenhall, Staffordshire.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He originally joined up on the 9th February 1911 at Lichfield aged 18 and posted as Private 8988 3rd South Stafford Regiment Special Reserve. He completed his annual training at Lichfield,9/2/1911, Strenshall, 11/5/1911, Shorncliff, 5/6/1911 Lichfield, 2/11/1911, Strenshall 6/5/12, and lastly, Lichfield 21/7/13. He was discharged from the South Staffords on the 6th March 1914 after serving 2 years and 28 days. He was discharged on consequence of having joined the Regular Army, the Royal Army Medical Corps who he joined on the 6th March 1914 at Lichfield he is now aged 21 years and 307 days The 12th March he was at RAMC Depot, Aldershot and on the 9th August 1914 he was at the School of Instruction, R.A.M.C., Aldershot. He served in France from the 10th August 1914 to 27th February 1915. In France he reported sick and on the 11th February 1915, he was transferred to England suffering from Otitis Media (Infection of the Middle Ear) from 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, France. He was medically discharged from the army on the 9th July 1915.
