BIRCUMSHAW Alfred , Private 28312, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment died 27th February 1920 aged 30. He was the son of Alfred and Emma of 55, Breach, Eastwood and husband of Margaret Elizabeth Leigh (formerly Bircumshaw) nee Wilmott, of 7, Greenhills, Eastwood. Born at Eastwood. in 1911 He was living with his wife and child at 8, Nether Green, He is at rest in Eastwood Cemetery, Nottinghamshire
Some notes from his army record -
He enlisted 17th September 1909 as Private 780, 1st Sherwood Foresters, aged 19 years and 7 months. Lived at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire and was a miner by occupation. His father, Alfred was his next of kin and he lived at 55 The Breach, Eastwood. There is no record that shows he served overseas. He completed his annual training from the 31st July 1910 to 19th September 1913. On the 20th October 1913 he re-engaged for a period of one year. On the 5th August 1914 he was posted to the 1st/8th and on the 22nd February 1915 was transferred to 1st/8th Sherwood Foresters. On 30th September 1915 he was discharged from the army on the termination of his engagement.
On the 10th November 1915 at Ilkeston he re-enlisted. On 1st April 1916 he transferred from the Sherwood Foresters to the Yorkshire Regiment. He embarked for France on 4th November 1916 and disembarked the next day. In France he was posted to the 37th Infantry Base Depot and was transferred to the 7th East Yorkshire Regiment on the 17th November 1916, with his new army number 28312. He was admitted into 53rd Field Ambulance suffering from Myalgia (muscle pain) on 20th January 1917 from there to 34th Casualty Clearing Station on the 23rd, on the 24th he was now in 12th General Hospital, Rouen. He was sent to England on 9th February 1917 suffering from Debility on Hospital Ship, Formosa. On 10th February he was admitted into Stoke on Trent War Hospital, Staffordshire. There he was diagnosed as having Trench Fever and was discharged on 16th March 1917. He was also a patient at Sandon Hall, Red Cross Hospital, Military Convalescent Hospital, Eccleshall, Staffordshire from 23rd February 1917 to 15th March 1917. He was then posted to the 3rd Battalion depot on 25th April 1917. From 15th March 1917 to 25th April 1917 it is possible that he had sick leave. ( Service personnel still get that privilege)
He was posted to his unit in France, embarking on 27th July 1918 and disembarking the next day. The same day he was posted to the 37th Infantry Base Depot in France and he was posted to 12th East Yorkshire Regiment. While he was in France he attended and was admitted on various dates for treatment from the 1st September 1917 to 7th May 1918. On one occasion he was admitted to 51st General Hospital. On 12th January 1918 he was suffering from Balanitis, on 19th February 1918 he was admitted into 4th Stationary Hospital suffering again from V.D.S.
On 9th March 1918 he was posted to 10th Battalion in the field. 28th June 1918 he was wounded in action and received a gun shot wound to the back (spine) and was admitted to 35th General Hospital, Calais. 24th July 1918 he was transferred to England and was admitted to 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester. He was medically discharged on 22nd February 1919 as no longer physically fit for war service, under Para 392(XVI) King's Regulations. In his record there is a sheet showing the hospitals he was admitted to in England and the causes for his admissions.
