BROWNLIE Alexander Dunsmuir. Private 7978, 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders died 12th November 1916. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He was born in 1893 and lived at 12. Lynedoch Street, Grennock, Scotland aged 22. He was by occupation a grocer. His parents were James and Margaret and they lived at 71 New Street, Dalry, Ayrshire. On the 4th January 1915 he joined up and posted to the Depot for training. On the 20th May 1915 he was posted to the British Expeditionary Force, France, 27th November 1915 he embarked Marselles, France bound for Salonica . He disembarked at Salonica on the 13th December 1915. While in Salonica he fell ill and was admitted to 40th Casualty Clearing Station with suspected Malaria on the 25th August 1916. On the 28th of August he was transferred to No21 Stationary Hospital, Salonica with jaundice. He was discharged later fit for duty to 27th Infantry Base Depot. On the 28th September 1916 he rejoined his regiment in Salonica. It was not long before he was re-admitted into 32nd Field Ambulance on the 3rd October 1916 suffering from diarrhoea, later he was transferred to No 1 Canadian Stationary Hospital . He was transferred to Malta on Hospital Ship, "Dover Castle" suffering from dysentery and malaria. He was admitted into Imtarfa Military Hospital, Malta on the 31st October 1916 and he died on the 12th November 1916.
JOHNSON Henry. Private 12721, 9th South Lancashire Regiment. He was wounded in Salonica and died in Malta on the 14th November 1916. He was born in 1889 at St Helens, Lancashire and he is at rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted at St Helens, Lancashire on the 7th September 1914 aged 25 years and 10 months. occupation a miner. He was posted to Seaford Camp for training on the 15th September 1914. He was married with two children. On the 23rd October 1909 at Parr, Lancashire he married Miss Ellen Wright and they lived together at 77, Parr Stocks Road, Parr, St Helens. Their children were called, Gladys born 19th March 1910 at St Helens. Beside her name is a date 6/8/1912 which appears to be a death date and Henry, born on the 31st October 1911 at St Helens. There is also anther date beside his name, 5/1/1912, again could be a death date. His conduct sheet was well used. on the 18th March 1915 at Lamberhurst, Kent he was given 168 hours, No 2 Field Punishment for attempting to strike an N.C.O., At Seaford Camp on the 2nd April 1915 he was drunk and disorderly in his hut about 9.15pm he received 14 days No2 Field Punishment. He was absent from tattoo (leave) from the 29th May 1915 till 10-30am on the 30th May 1915, Confined to camp for 5 days. At Aldershot on the 11th June 1915 he was smoking on parade, contrary to Battalion Orders, 7 days confined to camp. On the 4th June 1915 Drunk and disorderly in his barrack room at 9-30 pm and damaging property in the guard room. 7 days confined to barracks, fined 2 shillings and sixpence (2/-and 6p) 17th June 1915 refusing to obey and order from and N.C.O. 14 days confined to camp. At Bromley Camp on the 9th August 1915 5 days confined to camp for overstaying his leave pass from 11pm on the 9th August 1915 to 11-30am on the 10th August 1915. On the 6th September 1915 he was posted to France. No record shows him leaving France for the Mediterranean. At some stage he fell ill with Typhoid and on the 13th November 1916 he died of Enteric Fever (Typhoid) at Military Hospital, Imtarfa, Malta.
JEFFREY Robert James. Private 9476, 1st Royal Scots. (Lothian Regiment) He was wounded at Salonica and died of his wounds at sea on the 13th November 1916 aged 28. He was the son of Mrs Annie J Chapman of Woodhead, Ancrum, Roxburghshire. He enlisted on the 10th January 1906 and was posted as Private 411, 3/1st Royal Scots, Militia aged 18, and was by occupation a blacksmith. His parents were James and Annie of Mossburnford, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. He was posted to the Royal Scots Depot on the 1st May 1902 into the 1st Battalion. 12th February 1908 posted to 2nd battalion and on the 12th February 1909 back to the 1st Battalion. He saw service in India, Bombay, from 22nd January 1908 to 14th October 1914. He extended his service for the duration of the war, and given a new army number. Posted to France on the 19th December 1914 till 27th November 1915. Whilst in France at the front, he was shot in his right elbow while in action. on the 31st July 1915 and was treated at No 4 Canadian General Hospital, Le Treport. On the 28th July 1915 he was transferred to No 20 Convalescent Depot, Rouen, later to be sent back to his regiment fit for war service. He embarked Marselles on the 27th November 1915 and disembarked at Salonica on the 13th December 1915. He was severely wounded in action in Salonica on the 2nd October 1916 and was treated at No 4, Canadian General Hospital, Salonica. On the 13th November 1916 he was bound for Malta on Hospital Ship, Grantully Castle, he died of his wounds.
