ALBERT UNSTEAD. PRIVATE PLY/8286 ROYAL MARINE LIGHT INFANTRY ON HMS HIBERNIA BORN 10 AUG 1879. ENLISTED 21 JAN 1897 DIED 23 AUG 1903 AGED 24 CAUSE DROWNING. 10 MINUTES AFTER BEING LAST SEEN ALIVE, HE WAS FOUND LYING FACE DOWNWARDS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. IT IS NOT CLEAR HOW HE GOT INTO THE WATER. HIS FATHER WAS INFORMED OF HIS DEATH 1 SEP 03.

Albert UNSTEAD, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry, HMS Hibernia, died 23rd August 1903. On being relieved from duty at the Naval Magazine, near the old Canteen, he accidentally fell into the sea and drowned. Born nr.Tunbridge Wells, Kent, on 10th August 1879, he enlisted on 21st January 1897. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery. No headstone marked his grave until 2004 when ‘Royal Marines in Foreign Fields’, Malta, supplied one.
