2.24.02 Eugene James BEAR. Corporal 6943, 42nd Company Royal Engineers. Born 11 June 1866 at Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland to Joseph Turner and Margaret Bear nee Hall. Died in Valletta Hospital 9th October 1899, aged 33 years as the result of committing suicide.
Some notes from what remains of his army records -
He joined the Royal Engineers 3rd May 1886 aged 20 years, occupation fitter. Previous served with the 3rd Sussex Volunteers. His mother was his next of kin and she was residing at College Road, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. He was promoted to Lance Corporal 1 December 1892. 6 April 1893 he re-engaged for 12 years with the colours and again on 5 October 1895 to complete 21 years’ service with the colours. 5 October 1895 he was station at the Curragh Army Camp, County Kildare, Ireland.
