In memory of the N.C.Officers and Men of M Battery, 1st Brigade Royal Artillery who died while forming part of the Indian Expeditionary Force to Malta on the 28 Apr 1878, a contingent of Indian Native Troops left Bombay and Crannanore. They were commanded by Major General J Ross CB. The troops arrived at Malta, via Suez and Port Said, on 29 May, after a voyage of 30 days. They were held in readiness at Malta to intervene in the Russo-Turkish War.
John COSTELLO. Driver, died of cholera at Bombay 29th April 1878 aged 27 years.
Thomas McCLEAN. Corporal, died and buried at sea 2 May 1878 aged 27 years.

2.09.10 Richard DAVIES. Driver, 1st Brigade, Royal Artillery, died 25th July 1878, aged 24 years
2.09.10 Henry BARNES. Driver, 1st Royal Artillery, died 2nd September 1878, aged 27 years
