PLESTED Thomas (Tom). Private 7974, 56th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Inf). Born 1897, baptised 29 August 1897 at St Mary, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire to Ezra John and Jane Plested of 20 Victoria Place, Cheltenham. His father was a stone mason. 1901 residing with his parents and siblings at Watery Lane, Chipping Campden. 1911 with his widowed mother and siblings at Hist Street, Chipping Campden. At the time of his death his widowed mother was residing of Leasbourne, Chipping Campden. Died 5 July 1916 age 19. His mother was granted a war gratuity 19 October 1916 revised 23 August 1919. BRICKNELL Thomas. Private 2435, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1885 to William Henry and Sarah Ann Bricknell, nee Such. 1891 residing with his parents and siblings at the Angel Inn, Broad Campden. His father was licenced victualler (Innkeeper) and wheelwright. 1901 - 1911 with his parents and siblings at the Bakers Arms, Broad Campden. occupation, wheelwright. His mother was granted a war gratuity 29 November 1916 revised 11 September 1919. Killed in action 21 July 1916 age 32. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme
BRAIN Charles Thomas. Private 13234, 10th Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1897 to John and Mary Katherine Brain, nee Ladbrook of Littleworth. Chipping Campden. 1901 he was residing with his grandparents Thomas and Catherine Ladbrook at Lower High Street, Chipping Campden. 1905 his mother passed away his father remarried 10 December 1910 at St James Church Chipping Campden to Emma Cherry. I911 aged 11 he was a plough boy to widow, Mrs Elizabeth Crump, farmer at Laverton, Broadway. Killed in action, 23 October 1916 age 20. His father was granted a war gratuity 31 October 1916 revised 30 August 1919. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France
BINNS Raymond Louis. 2nd Lieutenant 8th Yorkshire Regiment. 21 March 1884 at Ipswich to Dr William Binns and Jane Clare Augustine Binns, nee Cartman of The Cedars, East Bergho Lieutenant Suffolk. Educated at Stoneyhurst College, Lancashire. Married 1913 to Sarah Maud Cartman He was killed by a bullet through his head 10 July 1916 age 32. as he led a party of bombers forward. CALLAWAY Frederick James. Corporal 6560, 2nd Worcestershire Regiment. Born 1886 at Birkenhead, baptised 11 September 1886 at St Luke, Tranmere, both in Cheshire to James and Sarah Callaway of Worcester. 1891 residing with his parents and siblings at the Hare and Hounds Inn, Bridgenorth, Shropshire. Father was a licenced victualler. 1901 with his parents and siblings at Gillam Street, Rainbow Hill Worcester. Occupation aged 14, machine user. 1911 Drummer in the 2nd Worcestershire Regiment stationed in India. 7 April 1913 at St James Church, Chipping Campden he married Frances Emily Griffin. At date not recorded she resided at 51 Wade Street, Firth Park, Sheffield. Appointed Corporal 6 May 1916. Killed in action near Thiepval 5 August 1916 age 30. His widow who was residing at Gainsborough Terrace, Campden, Glos was granted a war gratuity 14 November 1916 revised 1 October 1919.
Some notes from what remains of his arm records -
18 November 1901 with his parents’ permission he joined as Boy into the Worcestershire Regiment and posted to the Regimental Depot at Norton Barracks, Worcester he was aged 15 years and 3 months. 19 May 1906 he was promoted to Drummer. He attained the age of 18 on the 18 April 1913 and placed on man’s service. 17 November 1913 he was discharged on the termination of his 1st period of engagement at Aldershot. He re-engaged the same day with the colours and gave his occupation as railway porter. 12 September 1914 posted to France returning to England 8 December 1915 then returned to France 13 July 1915 to his death.
Wound and sickness -
1 December 1914 he was admitted with frostbite into 13 General Hospital, Boulogne then to England on SS Nile 8 December 1914. No record as to hospital or treatment given. He was discharged fit for duty on the 12 January 1915
He was wounded in action at Hooge, of a gunshot to the head 12 September 1915. Treated at 17 Causality Clearing Station same day. 13 September admitted into 25 General Hospital, Hardelot-Plage. 25 September admitted into 7th Convalescent Depot. 22 October 1915 he was at 3rd Infantry Base Depot, Rouen for deployment to his regiment Killed in action near Thiepval, France 5 August 1916.

WILLIAMS Frank Private 4834, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1887 to Joseph and Lucy Williams, nee Brotheridge of Chipping Campden. 1891-1901 residing with his parents and siblings at Watery Lane, Chipping Campden. 1911 residing with his parents and siblings at Lower High Street, Chipping Campden. Occupation, steam ploughman. He is commemorated on a family headstone in St James Churchyard, Chipping Campden. Died of wounds at 1/3rd South Midland (S.M.) Field Ambulance, France 17 August 1916 age 29. His mother was granted a war gratuity 16 January 1917 revised 23 September 1919. At rest in Varennes Military Cemetery, France.
