Soldiers from the Royal New Zealand Signals Corps Training have been on Exercise Bassett Black in Tekapo Military Training Area recently.
The final exercise of their 99 day Corps training was designed to test the skills they have learnt as well as assessing how they work both as individuals and as a team, ensuring they can work as part of a Communication and Information Systems (CIS) detachment in a tactical land environment.

The soldiers utilised a wide range of skills including establishing secret computer networks, troubleshooting tactical radio networks, responding to vehicle ambushes, establishing Command Posts and demonstrating competency on network applications such as SitaWare.
Traditionally run by the School of Signals in Linton, this is the first time in nearly 10 years that the Corps training has been run by 4th Signals Squadron based in Burnham.

2nd Engineer Regiment’s 2 Field Squadron recently conducted Exercise Overlord in the Waiouru Military Training Area. The exercise saw Combat Engineers get back to using their core skills, provided the opportunity to introduce new search equipment, and the chance to integrate Explosive Detection Dogs back into search training.

The exercise included a number of section and troop level activities in a security and stabilisation operation. Tasks included route, area and personnel search and cache clearances, support to civilian Police and a deliberate cordon and search operation.
The unit was well supported by Explosive Ordnance Disposal, a reconnaissance detachment from 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment as well as a detachment and Intelligence Support Team from 1st Command Support Regiment. This combined training showed how reconnaissance, intelligence and Engineers would work together in an explosive hazard environment.

New Zealand Commissioning Course 2022, Exercise Takrouna.
From cordon and searches to observation posts onto enemy camps, this exercise exposed cadets to increasingly complex tasks while working within a company environment. Through this exercise, Cadets learn their actions are not singular in nature, but part of a much larger overall picture.

Core military skills.
Starting at 8am and finishing at 7pm, key military skills were tested during Exercise Torokiki. Soldiers got tasks including:
Teamwork, orders and reaction shoots
Weapon handling, observation stands and gun runs
Stretcher carries, medical care and medical stands
Reaction shoots, watermanship training and minefield clearance
Mental challenges, a confidence course and more
This version of ‘the longest day’ included the skillset soldiers are expected to be proficient in, and is applicable to all ranks and trades regardless of experience or ability.
Soldiers were re-connected with core military skills during tasks that were underpinned with camaraderie and competition.
