CPA 10 Sergeant Nicolas Mazier, KIA on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 in Iraq. He was killed while returning fire after partner forces where engaged by enemy forces during a recon operation in which French SOF were providing support. Mazier had been serving with special operations units since 2019

On the afternoon of August 29, 2023, Iraqi forces were ambushed by IS jihadists during a recon op some 100km north of Bagdad. French SOF, supporting the op, returned fire. This resulted in a firefight lasting over 5 hours. Besides the death of sergeant Mazier, 4 French SOF members were wounded as well as 3 Iraqi soldiers. Dozens of IS members were killed.
