Taipei, July 18 (CNA) Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) on Tuesday confirmed that Taiwan has plans to purchase a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System 2 (NASAMS 2) from the United States.
Speaking on the sidelines of a legislative session, Chiu said media reports about the acquisition were correct but that the military had not yet received an official notification regarding a timeline for the purchase.
Chiu said the effectiveness of NASAMS had been demonstrated by its performance in Ukraine, where U.S. defense officials claim it has had a 100 percent success rate in intercepting Russian missiles.
Chieh Chung (揭仲), an associate research fellow with the National Policy Foundation in Taipei, told CNA that part of the NASAM 2's attractiveness was the system's ability to use Link 16, a standardized military communications protocol providing tactical data links between North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members.
NASAM 2 can also be integrated with other systems as a highly adaptable mid-range air defense solution and improve engagement efficiency, Chieh added.
An unnamed expert who spoke with CNA described NASAM 2 as a powerful short- to medium-range, ground-based air defense system that can protect against a variety of aerial threats, including drone, missile, helicopter and aircraft attacks within 40-50 kilometers.
According to the expert, the system integrates U.S.-built MPQ-64 Sentinel air defense radar, as well as multiple short- and medium-range air defense missile systems.
In addition, the expert said, AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air (AMRAAM), AMRAAM Extended Range, short-range AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder and the German-made IRIS-T short-range anti-aircraft missiles are all compatible with the system.

Japanese forces will fire their most advanced anti-ship missile into Australian waters for the first time, ahead of large-scale multinational military exercises that begin later this week.
The ABC can reveal Japan's Self Defense Force (JSDF) is preparing to soon conduct a live fire demonstration of its Type 12 Surface-to-Ship missile (SSM) at a weapons range in Jervis Bay, south of Sydney.
Friday's activity will occur on the same day Exercise Talisman Sabre 2023 is formally opened in Sydney, which will this year see South Korea also showcase its much-lauded Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system.
Chief of staff for Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force, General Morishita Yasunori, has told the ABC his country's participation in the biennial military exercise is expanding.

US officials suspect the Ream base is being converted for use by China, a close ally of Cambodia, as Beijing seeks to buttress its international heft with a network of naval and military outposts. Cambodia has long denied the base on the Gulf of Thailand is for use by any foreign power -- despite Beijing funding the revamp -- but the row has been a festering sore in ties with the United States for years.
"It is near completion. We will inaugurate it soon," Chhum Socheat, a Cambodian defence ministry spokesman, told AFP "We already declared that there is no Chinese military base there -- we are just modernising our military to reach a capable level in order to protect our territorial integrity."
New satellite images from BlackSky, a US commercial imagery company, show rapid progress in building work at the site over the past two years. The pictures show a pier 363 metres (1,190 feet) in length jutting into the sea, according to an expert quoted by BlackSky. "There is a near-exact similarity between an angled deep-water pier located on the western shore of the Ream base and another military pier at the People’s Liberation Army Support Base in Djibouti," said the expert, Craig Singleton of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a hawkish Washington security think tank.
The Cambodian defence ministry spokesman rejected the claims about the pier being built to berth aircraft carriers. US fears about the base go back as far as 2019, when the Wall Street Journal reported on a deal allowing Beijing to dock warships at Ream. The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)'s Invincible-class submarine, Impeccable, was received in Singapore in a homecoming ceremony held at RSS Singapura – Changi Naval Base on 20th July 2023. Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Sean Wat, senior RSN officers and submariners were present to witness the ceremony.
Launched in Kiel, Germany on 13 Dec 2022, Impeccable is one of four Invincible-class submarines designed for operations in Singapore's shallow and busy tropical waters. Custom-built for Singapore's needs, these submarines possess state-of-the-art capabilities, including high levels of automation, significant payload capacity, enhanced underwater endurance, and ergonomics optimised for the Asian physique. Their induction into the RSN will further enhance its capability to safeguard Singapore and protect its vital sea lines of communication.
Impeccable will be undergoing a series of local sea trials and workup towards full operationalisation. Invincible remains in Germany to support the training of RSN submariners, while the last two submarines are progressing well in their project development in Germany.

North Korea has shown a nuclear underwater drone Haiel. The DPRK for the first time showed at the military parade, which was held in Pyongyang on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, the Haiel-1 nuclear submarine drone. Earlier it was reported that North Korea tested "Haiel-1", the device was underwater for more than 40 hours. At the parade, four underwater drones were transported on tractors. Underwater drones "Haiel-1" have a length of at least 10 meters and a diameter of about 1.5 meters, underwater drones are painted in orange and black colors, as prototypes of nuclear weapons are usually marked. Indonesia Air Force will receive the third unit of C-130J-30 Super Hercules aircraft from the Defense Ministry on Tuesday (Aug 15), as the plane has arrived at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base on Wednesday (Aug 9).
The Head of the Air Force's Information Service, air commodore Agung Sasongkojati, confirmed on Friday (Aug 11), that the ministry will officially hand over the aircraft with A-1343 registration number on Tuesday.
The third unit of the ordered military transport aircraft was flown from the factory of Lockheed Martin in Georgia, the United States, on Thursday (Aug 3) and embarked on a 33-hour-long flight to Jakarta.

This came to light following the visit of a five-member PCG delegation to New Delhi last week. The team, headed by PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Manalo Abu, held a bilateral meeting with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to enhance maritime cooperation.
The PCG delegation witnessed the operational capabilities of indigenous Indian ships and aircraft, including that of the ICG ALH MK-III.
Developed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the ALH MK III helicopters are fitted with state-of-the-art equipment such as modern surveillance radar and electro-optical sensors, Shakti engines, full-glass cockpit, high-intensity searchlight, advanced communication systems, automatic identification system as well as search-and-rescue homer.
These features enable the helicopter to undertake maritime reconnaissance as well as carry out search and rescue at extended ranges while operating from ships, day or night.

The submarine has a two-shaft design similar to the submarines of Project 633. The submarine is equipped with a missile compartment with ten missiles silos for nuclear ballistic missiles. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said that the country has made significant progress in the development of the shipbuilding industry. All commanders of the submarine vowed to glorify the DPRK Navy.

Under a strategic partnership, the countries will seek to expand cooperation in several areas from defence and security to climate change and education.
"This elevation is an important symbol of the strength of our relationship and our shared commitment to do more together," Albanese told officials, diplomats and reporters after the two leaders signed the agreement.
China's growing assertiveness on Taiwan and the militarisation of artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea have spurred Canberra, as well as Washington, to deepen defence cooperation with longstanding ally Manila.
At the start of talks, Marcos thanked Albanese for his "strong support" for the Philippines as it seeks to fend off maritime claims that are "not valid", in a thinly veiled reference to China.
"To have friends like you and partners like you especially on that subject is very gratifying and encourages us to continue down that path," Marcos told Albanese.
Albanese described the two countries as "great friends" and expressed hope that his visit would help take the relationship "to an even higher level".

Taiwan unveiled its first domestically developed submarine on Thursday, a major step in a project aimed at strengthening the island’s defense and deterrence against the Chinese navy, though it won’t enter service for another two years.
Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has made the indigenous submarine program a key part of an ambitious project to modernize its armed forces as Beijing stages almost daily military exercises to assert its sovereignty.
President Tsai Ing-wen, who initiated the plan when she took office in 2016, showed off the first of eight new submarines on Thursday in the southern city of Kaohsiung.
“In the past, a domestically developed submarine was considered an impossible task. But, today, a submarine designed and manufactured by our country’s people sits before our eyes,” Tsai said, adding that it would play an important role in strengthening the navy’s “asymmetric warfare” capabilities.
“Even if there are risks, and no matter how many challenges there are, Taiwan must take this step and allow the self-reliant national defense policy to grow and flourish on our land,” Tsai said, standing in front of the ship, named the Narwhal. Taiwan’s red flag, featuring a white sun against a blue sky, was wrapped around the submarine’s bow.
Tsai said the Narwhal will enter service in 2025, joining two existing submarines purchased from the Netherlands in the 1980s.

The President of Indonesia opened the military parade on a BMP-3. A military parade was held in Indonesia on October 5 to celebrate the anniversary of the Indonesian Armed Forces. The military parade was accepted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo standing on a Russian-made BMP-3F. Indonesian President Joko Widodo said the military parade demonstrates Indonesia's readiness to face global challenges. Previously, Indonesia acquired Russian armored vehicles three times: in September 2007, 17 BMP-3, in May 2012, 37 BMP-3, and in April 2019, 40 BMP-3. The BMP-2 can also be seen at the parade. The date October 5 was chosen in Indonesia to celebrate the National Armed Forces Day, created in 1945.
