Hey folks,

I came here hoping someone could help me identify this item from my Grandfather's cache of was memorabilia. He had his hand shot off in Europe and lived his whole life with a hook; amazing man. On the front it says "Bombardement De Strasbourg 1870". The bombardment itself is easy to lookup, but I'm curious about the item itself. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

Not my bag, old boy, but we have some deaf old arty types @Bombardier who might have an idea.

Struggling with this one mate, but I would be inclined to agree with @Fish&Chips. your grandfather likely picked this up on his travels during the war in Europe. I have had a good old trawl through the web and can find no references to this book in particular.

Welcome to Mi.Net :)

Fish&Chips and Bombardier said it all, memorial photo album published after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 / 1871. On could add that it was most probably published in "Elsass-Lothringen", the parts of France that had been annexed by Prussia after the war, as the inscriptions are as well in German as in French.

"La grand brèche / Grosse Bresche" = the great breach
"Porte Saverne / Saverne - Thor" = the Saverne gate (Saverne is a town to the north of Strasbourg)
