The CIA blamed bad mapping but China has never believed that the strikes were an accident.

Interesting it is still brought up 20 years later, though having said that the settlements seem weak, at least the publicly known couple of millions.
Hardly enough to satiate the Chinese.

At the time the strong story had been it was hit as it was acting as a sigint and relay station.
A lot of new weapons got their outing in Serbia, maybe a new play on an old tactic got an outing, simply unknowingly hitting an embassy rather than a Serbian facility. OTOH a lot of civvies got killed in that bombing ~ 500. Did anyone really care what they bombed?

I have absolutely no doubt the Russians and Chinese both received F117 parts. There's plenty more of the remnants on public display in Serbian air museum next to Belgrade airport.

There were a lot of odd rumors about the reasons why
Outdated intel (fishy but why not, in this case this also means that a country observed by the bulk of NATO INTEL was able to be deceptive enough to make said NATO intel use not accurate intelligence)
Too much outdated intel though during that campaign (2 AH64 down supposedly because of high power lines not labelled on the maps, WTF ?)
Wave riding against electronic signals coming from the embassy, either as a SRT secundary plant or as Chinese SIGINT/ELINT post
In this last case, the question is was it accidental (as in a missile taking a ride on the wrong wave) or voluntary (as in a way either to silence serbian propaganda apparatus or chinese support)

The fact that the RTS building was bombed willingly this time should also make people raise an eyebrow
From then, journalists began to be fair targets in various conflicts as a direct consequences

To close the discussion let's be frank. Everybody lied back then. The Serbian medias and political apparatus obviously but, more "astonishing" for the side of goodness and freedom, NATO too and a bunch

Funny fact:

In China the reaction of the simple citizen after the bombardment of the Chinese embassy was strong and real. The government was at the time totally surprised and when the population asked for reaction, they had only 2 options go nuke or .... nothing (the Chinese army was numerous with still poorly armed).
This was the turning point for the Chinese and they stared a fast modernization of their armed forces (thanks to the USA !).

As for the F117 operations there is a nice book to read. The view from a pilot from inside the F-117 and at the NATO headquaters planning the missions (the author was a little pissed off by what he was asked to do because according to him Wesley Clark at the NATO headquarters was not conducting a war but a PR show for himself like asking A-10 to attack tanks below the safe altitude so he can present the attack run on TV briefing, etc ....)

The hitting of the Chinese Embassy was intended, 100% Intentional and that is all there is to it.

Wesley Clarke for all his Problems and they are numerous has been pretty good in exposing that which everyone paying Attention has known. Western Intentions were never about Human Rights not did they limit themselves to the Balkans, the rest is Child Play.
